Passionflower carries a 'Possibly Effective' rating for insomnia and pre-procedural anxiety — the two conditions where there's the most research backing. For alcohol use disorder and benzodiazepine withdrawal, evidence is too thin to rate.
California poppy, nutmeg, and hops all show insufficient reliable evidence to rate them for their traditional uses, including anxiety and insomnia. The evidence supporting this blend's effectiveness isn't established in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Passionflower is generally well tolerated short-term but commonly causes drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, and sedation. A rare case of severe nausea, vomiting, prolonged heart-rhythm changes, and fainting-like episodes was reported after high doses.
Avoid passionflower during pregnancy due to lack of safety data and possible effects on the uterus; breastfeeding safety is unknown. California poppy has limited safety data; when combined with other herbs in trials, it caused muscular stiffness, morning fatigue, and nausea, though it's unclear if California poppy alone was the cause.
Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Nutmeg is safe as a food spice but unsafe at high medicinal doses — overdoses carry serious cardiovascular, neurological, and psychiatric risks including hallucinations and even death.
Food amounts are fine; concentrated supplements should be avoided. Hops is generally well tolerated short-term but may cause drowsiness; long-term safety is unclear.
Occupational exposure to hops dust causes chronic respiratory problems. Avoid hops during pregnancy; safety while breastfeeding is unknown.

Califolia poppy, nutmeg, and hops also interact moderately with CNS depressants, compounding the sedation risk if you're on any sedative medication. Nutmeg adds moderate concerns with CYP1A2 substrates (certain antidepressants and other drugs metabolized this way), anticholinergic drugs (used for various conditions), cholinergic drugs (including some medications for myasthenia gravis and Alzheimer's), and phenobarbital (a barbiturate).
Passionflower and hops carry minor interactions with CYP3A4 substrates — a large group that includes many statins, blood pressure drugs, and immunosuppressants. Hops also has a minor interaction with estrogens and a moderate one with estrogen-replacement therapy at higher doses.

Hemp decarboxylated flowering top extract
Estrogens
Theoretically, hemp might interfere with hormone therapy due to its estrogenic effects.
In an ovariectomized animal model, a diet containing hemp seed 1%, 2%, or 10% resulted in normalized plasma levels of 17-beta-estradiol. The mechanism of action for this effect is unclear.
Ace Inhibitors (Aceis)
Theoretically, consuming hemp seed protein isolate with ACE inhibitors might have additive effects and increase the risk of hypotension.
Hemp seed protein hydrolysate has shown ACE inhibitor-like effects in a hypertensive animal model. However, hempseed oil consumption does not seem to reduce blood pressure in humans. Until more is known, monitor blood pressure and potassium levels.
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, hemp seed might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.
In animal research, hemp seed at 5% of the diet inhibits platelet aggregation in vitro. However, in human research, taking hemp seed oil 2 grams daily for 12 weeks does not inhibit the aggregation of platelets in vitro.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, hemp seed protein may have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs.
In a hypertensive animal model, hemp seed protein hydrolysate reduced systolic blood pressure by a mechanism possibly involving the inhibition of renin and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activities. However, there was no effect of hemp seed protein on blood pressure in normotensive animals. Furthermore, hempseed oil consumption does not seem to reduce blood pressure in humans.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP3A4 enzymes.
Hops extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of hops with sedative drugs might cause additive sedation.
Some animal research shows that hops has sedative effects.
Estrogens
Theoretically, concomitant use of large amounts of hops might interfere with hormone replacement therapy due to competition for estrogen receptors.
In vitro research suggests that certain hops constituents can competitively bind to estrogen receptors. However, most hops extracts contain very small amounts of these constituents.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Hops extract does not seem to affect the metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that flavonoid constituents of hops inhibit CYP1A2 enzyme activity. However, a pharmacokinetic study in healthy postmenopausal patients shows that taking a standardized extract of spent hops containing prenylated phenols, as 59.5 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, does not affect levels of caffeine, a CYP1A2 probe substrate.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, hops extract might alter metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates; however, this effect may not be clinically significant.
Animal research suggests that specific constituents of hops, called lupulones, can induce hepatic CYP3A4 enzyme activity. However, a pharmacokinetic study in healthy postmenopausal patients with normal metabolism shows that taking a standardized extract of spent hops containing prenylated phenols, as 59.5 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, decreases the concentration of alprazolam, a CYP3A4 probe substrate, by 7.6%. This reduction is unlikely to be clinically relevant.
Passionflower extract
Cns Depressants
Concomitant use of passion flower with sedative drugs might cause additive effects and side effects.
Research in animals and humans shows that passion flower has sedative effects which can be additive when used with sedative medications like lorazepam.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, passion flower might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that passion flower can induce CYP3A4 enzymes, albeit to a much lower degree than rifampin, a known CYP3A4 inducer.
Organic Anion-Transporting Polypeptide Substrates (Oatp)
Theoretically, passion flower might reduce the bioavailability of OATP2B1 and OATP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the passion flower constituents apigenin and vitexin inhibit OATP2B1 and OATP1A2. This inhibition may be dose-dependent. One specific high-flavonoid passion flower extract (Valverde) seems to inhibit OATP2B1 and OATP1A2, while another extract with a lower flavonoid concentration (Arkocaps) shows less potent inhibition. OATPs are responsible for the uptake of drugs and other compounds into the body; however, the specific activities of OATP2B1 and OATP1A2 are not well characterized.
Nutmeg seed extract
Anticholinergic Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of nutmeg and anticholinergic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of either agent.
Animal research suggests that nutmeg extract can inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels.
Cholinergic Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of nutmeg with other cholinergic drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of cholinergic side effects.
Animal research suggests that nutmeg extract can inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, nutmeg might increase the risk of additive sedation when taken with CNS depressants.
Animal studies suggest that nutmeg extracts and several volatile oils in nutmeg, such as methyleugenol, isoeugenol, safrole, myristicin, trimyristin, 1,8-cineole, and geranyl acetate, have sedative effects. One animal study shows that petroleum ether extracts of nutmeg can potentiate the effects of pentobarbital or phenobarbital. However, evidence from other animal research suggests that the nutmeg constituent myristicin can actually reduce sleeping time in rats pretreated with phenobarbital.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, nutmeg might decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Animal research suggests that intraperitoneal injections of myristicin, a constituent of nutmeg, can induce CYP1A2.
Phenobarbital (Luminal)
Theoretically, nutmeg might increase or decrease the effects and adverse effects of phenobarbital.
Some animal research suggests that myristicin, a constituent of nutmeg, can reduce sleeping time in rats pretreated with phenobarbital. However, other animal research suggests that petroleum ether extract of nutmeg can potentiate the effects of phenobarbital.
California Poppy whole flowering plant extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, taking California poppy with drugs with sedative effects may increase the risk of sedative effects.
Laboratory research shows that California poppy has sedative effects.
