Hemp and Acetaminophen, Caffeine, Dihydrocodeine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Acetaminophen, Caffeine, Dihydrocodeine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Caffeine, Dihydrocodeine

Acetaminophen, Caffeine, Dihydrocodeine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

This combination pill has three parts, and the one that matters most here is the caffeine, which your body clears using an enzyme called CYP1A2. Lab studies suggest hemp may speed that enzyme up a bit, which could in theory let caffeine wash out a little faster, so you might notice slightly less of its pick-me-up effect. The dihydrocodeine (pain relief) and acetaminophen aren't really affected by this pathway, so your pain control shouldn't change.

Honestly, this is a theoretical concern based only on test-tube research, not real people, and it's rated minor. Food amounts of hemp seeds or oil are very unlikely to matter. If you use concentrated hemp products regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist so they can keep an eye on things.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Acetaminophen, Caffeine, Dihydrocodeine also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the situation with this combo pill (acetaminophen, caffeine, and dihydrocodeine). Lab studies hint that hemp may speed up a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which helps process some of these ingredients. If that happened in the body, it could in theory lower the levels of certain components, possibly making the pain relief feel a little weaker. There's a twist worth knowing: dihydrocodeine is a prodrug, meaning the body has to convert it into its active painkilling form, so the math can get complicated.

The honest takeaway: this is only a theoretical, lab-based concern, not something proven in people, and the food amounts of hemp seeds most folks eat are unlikely to matter. Still, if you rely on this medicine for pain, check with your pharmacist before adding concentrated hemp supplements.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Acetaminophen, Caffeine, Dihydrocodeine page

“Anything else that sedates you is the headline risk with this combination painkiller. Panlor and DHC Plus pair acetaminophen and caffeine with the opioid dihydrocodeine, and 78 of the 303 supplements on file, kava and even beer or wine among them, can deepen the opioid's drowsiness and, at the extreme, dangerously slow breathing.”

About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
