Why this applies to Nifedipine

Nifedipine falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp seed protein may have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs.
In a hypertensive animal model, hemp seed protein hydrolysate reduced systolic blood pressure by a mechanism possibly involving the inhibition of renin and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activities. However, there was no effect of hemp seed protein on blood pressure in normotensive animals. Furthermore, hempseed oil consumption does not seem to reduce blood pressure in humans.

Here's the gist for hemp and nifedipine: in theory, hemp seed protein might gently nudge your blood pressure down too, on top of what your nifedipine is already doing. If those effects stacked up, you could feel a little dizzy or lightheaded, get a headache, or notice your heart racing, which are already common nifedipine side effects.

But honestly, I wouldn't lose sleep over this one. The signal comes from animal studies only, and the effect showed up in animals that were already hypertensive, not in healthy ones. In people, hemp seed oil didn't actually lower blood pressure. Eating hemp seeds as food is very unlikely to matter. If you take concentrated hemp protein and notice your numbers dropping, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

Nifedipine also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP3A4 enzymes.

Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear nifedipine. In lab studies (test tube, not people), hemp seemed to speed that enzyme up. If that happened in real life, your body could break down nifedipine a little faster, which might soften its effect and let your blood pressure or chest pain creep back up.

Here is the reassuring part: this is rated minor and rests only on test-tube data, so we honestly do not know if it matters in people. Eating hemp seeds or hemp oil as food is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you are thinking about concentrated hemp supplements, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, and keep an eye on your blood pressure readings.

What Is Nifedipine Used For?

Brand names: Procardia XL, Adalat PA, Adalat, Nifedin, Nifed PA, Nifed, Procardia, Adalat XL, Adalat CC, Adalat LA, Adalat Retard, Adipine MR, Adipine XL, Cardilate MR, Coracten SR, Coracten XL, Fortipine LA 40, Hypolar Retard 20, Nifedipress MR, Nifopress Retard, Tensipine MR

Nifedipine treats high blood pressure (hypertension), chronic stable angina (chest pain brought on by physical effort), and vasospastic angina (chest pain caused by spasm of the coronary arteries, sometimes called Prinzmetal's angina). Lowering blood pressure with nifedipine helps reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

The capsule form is approved for vasospastic angina and chronic stable angina only — it is not approved for high blood pressure. The extended-release tablet (including Procardia) covers all three uses: vasospastic angina, chronic stable angina, and high blood pressure.
