Hemp and Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestrel

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 3 Interactions?

Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestrel falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

ESTROGENS

1 of 3

Why this applies to Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestrel

Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestrel falls under ESTROGENS — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp might interfere with hormone therapy due to its estrogenic effects.
In an ovariectomized animal model, a diet containing hemp seed 1%, 2%, or 10% resulted in normalized plasma levels of 17-beta-estradiol. The mechanism of action for this effect is unclear.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

You're asking about hemp alongside your birth control pill, which combines ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and norgestrel (a progestin). Here's the honest picture: the only signal we have comes from an animal study where hemp seed in the diet seemed to nudge natural estrogen levels. The way it does this isn't understood, and there is no solid human data showing hemp changes how your pill works.

In theory, if hemp has any estrogen-like activity, it could slightly add to or interfere with your hormones. Practically speaking, the amount in food (hemp seeds, hemp oil) is very unlikely to matter. If you're taking concentrated hemp supplements and notice things like breakthrough bleeding, breast tenderness, or nausea, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

2 of 3

Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestrel also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP1A2 enzymes.

Here's the gist with your birth control pill (Ovral, Lo/Ovral, and similar combos of ethinyl estradiol and norgestrel). In lab dishes, hemp appears to speed up an enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways your body uses to break down the estrogen part of the pill. If that pathway runs faster, hormone levels could in theory dip a little, and the worry would be slightly weaker protection against pregnancy.

That said, this is very weak, theoretical evidence from test-tube and animal studies, not from real people. Hemp seeds or hemp oil in food are unlikely to matter. Concentrated hemp supplements are more of an unknown. Since reliable birth control is the goal, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding any hemp product.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Your birth control pill, which combines ethinyl estradiol and norgestrel, gets broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Some lab studies suggest hemp might speed that enzyme up. In theory, that could clear the hormones out of your body a little faster and lower their levels in your blood.

Here's the honest part: this is based only on test-tube research, not on real people taking hemp and the pill together. So we don't really know if it matters in daily life. Still, since this pill prevents pregnancy, even small changes are worth respecting. If hemp lowered the hormone levels enough, it could in theory reduce how well your birth control works or cause some breakthrough spotting. Food amounts of hemp seeds are very unlikely to be a problem. If you're using concentrated hemp supplements, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
