Hemp and Caffeine (OTC drug)

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Caffeine (OTC drug) falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Caffeine (OTC drug)

Caffeine (OTC drug) falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the gist for caffeine pills like Vivarin: your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to clear caffeine out of your system. Some early lab research suggests hemp might speed that enzyme up a bit. If that happened in real life, your body could break down caffeine a little faster, meaning the pick-me-up might wear off sooner or feel weaker than usual.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. It comes only from test-tube and cell studies, not from people, and it's rated as a minor interaction. For most folks eating hemp seeds or hemp oil as food, this isn't something to lose sleep over. If you ever notice your caffeine just isn't doing much, mention it to your pharmacist.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Caffeine (OTC drug) also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP3A4 enzymes.

Here's the gist with hemp and a caffeine pill like Vivarin. Some lab studies suggest hemp may speed up an enzyme called CYP3A4, one of the body's drug-processing pathways. If that happened, your body might clear caffeine a bit faster, which in theory could make a caffeine tablet feel slightly weaker or wear off sooner. So you might notice a little less of that alert, wide-awake boost.

Honestly, I wouldn't lose sleep over this one (no pun intended). The evidence is only test-tube and animal data, and caffeine is mostly broken down by a different enzyme (CYP1A2) anyway, so any real-world effect is likely small. Everyday hemp seeds in food are very unlikely to matter. If you have questions, your pharmacist is happy to help.

  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Caffeine (OTC drug) page

“The person swallowing a caffeine pill like Vivarin to power through a shift is often the same person drinking coffee, taking an herbal energy blend, or scooping pre-workout powder, and that overlap is exactly where the danger sits. About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
