Hemp and Bivalirudin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Bivalirudin

Bivalirudin falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp seed might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.
In animal research, hemp seed at 5% of the diet inhibits platelet aggregation in vitro. However, in human research, taking hemp seed oil 2 grams daily for 12 weeks does not inhibit the aggregation of platelets in vitro.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Bivalirudin is a strong blood thinner given through an IV, usually during heart procedures like angioplasty or stenting. It works directly on a clotting protein called thrombin to keep your blood from clotting too easily. The concern here is that hemp seed might add a little extra anti-clotting nudge by making platelets slightly less sticky, which could in theory raise bleeding risk.

Honestly, I wouldn't lose sleep over this one. The platelet effect was only seen in a lab dish using animal diets, and an actual human study using hemp seed oil showed no meaningful effect. Since bivalirudin is given in a hospital where your team watches you closely, just mention any hemp products you use to your care team so they have the full picture.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Bivalirudin page

“Bivalirudin (Angiomax) is a strong intravenous blood thinner used during heart procedures like angioplasty, and because bleeding is already its main built-in danger, this list deserves genuine care. All 202 supplements on it interact the same basic way: they thin the blood or blunt platelets themselves, stacking bleeding risk on top of…”

About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
