Hemp and Ethinyl Estradiol

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 3 Interactions?

Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Ethinyl Estradiol falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

ESTROGENS

1 of 3

Why this applies to Ethinyl Estradiol

Ethinyl Estradiol falls under ESTROGENS — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp might interfere with hormone therapy due to its estrogenic effects.
In an ovariectomized animal model, a diet containing hemp seed 1%, 2%, or 10% resulted in normalized plasma levels of 17-beta-estradiol. The mechanism of action for this effect is unclear.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Ethinyl estradiol is a synthetic estrogen, and you'll find it in many birth control pills and some hormone therapies. The concern here is mostly on paper. In one animal study, adding hemp seed to the diet seemed to nudge natural estrogen levels back toward normal, which hints that hemp may have some estrogen-like activity of its own. Nobody knows exactly how this works, and there's no solid human data showing it changes how your medication performs.

So while it's a theoretical overlap rather than a proven problem, I'd take it seriously enough to mention it. If you rely on this medicine for contraception or symptom control, and you're using concentrated hemp supplements (not just hemp seeds in a salad), check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

2 of 3

Ethinyl Estradiol also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Here's the gist for hemp and ethinyl estradiol, the estrogen in many birth control pills. Your body partly clears this estrogen using a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. In lab dish studies, hemp seemed to speed that enzyme up. If that happened in real life, it could lower your estrogen levels a bit, which in theory might mean less reliable effects (think breakthrough spotting, or in a worst case, reduced contraceptive protection).

The honest part: this is theoretical, based only on test-tube work, not people. Everyday hemp seeds or hemp oil in food are very unlikely to cause trouble. Still, since pregnancy prevention matters, mention any concentrated hemp supplements to your pharmacist or doctor before starting.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Here's the gist for hemp and ethinyl estradiol, the estrogen in many birth control pills and hormone therapies. Your body clears this estrogen using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies suggest hemp may speed up that enzyme, which in theory could lower estrogen levels and weaken its effect. For a birth control pill, that could mean less reliable protection or breakthrough bleeding and spotting.

I want to be straight with you though: this is based only on test-tube research, not real people, and it's rated a minor, possible interaction. Eating hemp seeds or hemp oil in normal food amounts is very unlikely to matter. If you're using concentrated hemp supplements alongside your pill, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ethinyl Estradiol page

“Ethinyl estradiol (Estinyl) is the estrogen in many birth control pills, and I treat its supplement list with real care, because the stake is not just side effects but whether the pill keeps working. Three of its 211 interacting ingredients are rated major, and those come first: St.”

About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
