Hemp and Estradiol, Norgestimate

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Estradiol, Norgestimate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

ESTROGENS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Estradiol, Norgestimate

Estradiol, Norgestimate falls under ESTROGENS — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp might interfere with hormone therapy due to its estrogenic effects.
In an ovariectomized animal model, a diet containing hemp seed 1%, 2%, or 10% resulted in normalized plasma levels of 17-beta-estradiol. The mechanism of action for this effect is unclear.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the situation with hemp and your hormone therapy (Ortho-Prefest combines estradiol with norgestimate). The concern is that hemp may have mild estrogen-like activity of its own. In theory, that could nudge how your body responds to the hormones you're already taking, either adding to them or slightly throwing off the balance the product is meant to provide.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it comes from an animal study only, where hemp seed in the diet helped normalize estrogen levels. We don't have good human data, and the exact mechanism isn't clear. So this is more theoretical than proven. Eating hemp seeds as food is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated hemp supplements are a fair question to run by your pharmacist or doctor.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Estradiol, Norgestimate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with hemp and your Ortho-Prefest (estradiol plus norgestimate). Some lab studies suggest hemp may speed up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which helps process estrogen. If that happened in your body, your estradiol could clear out a bit faster, slightly lowering its levels. In theory, that might soften the benefit you're getting, with things like a return of hot flashes or some breakthrough spotting.

But I don't want to alarm you. This is rated minor and is based only on test-tube research, not real people. Everyday hemp foods like hemp seeds or hemp oil are very unlikely to cause a problem. If you're thinking about concentrated hemp supplements, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
