Hemp and Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 3 Interactions?

Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

ESTROGENS

1 of 3

Why this applies to Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol

Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol falls under ESTROGENS — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp might interfere with hormone therapy due to its estrogenic effects.
In an ovariectomized animal model, a diet containing hemp seed 1%, 2%, or 10% resulted in normalized plasma levels of 17-beta-estradiol. The mechanism of action for this effect is unclear.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

The patch you are using (Ortho Evra) delivers two hormones, a progestin and ethinyl estradiol, to prevent pregnancy. The concern here is purely theoretical. In one animal study, hemp seed in the diet seemed to nudge natural estrogen levels back toward normal, but the reason why was never pinned down. There is no solid human evidence that hemp changes how your birth control works.

Practically speaking, the small amount of hemp seeds or hemp oil you would eat as food is very unlikely to affect your patch or its reliability. If you are thinking about concentrated hemp supplements, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first so nothing surprises you. Do not stop or change your patch on your own.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

2 of 3

Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Your Ortho Evra patch delivers two hormones, norelgestromin and ethinyl estradiol, that your liver gradually clears using several enzymes, including one called CYP1A2. Some lab research suggests hemp may speed that enzyme up a little. In theory, faster clearance could mean slightly lower hormone levels, which is the concern people raise about anything that might weaken birth control.

Here's my honest take: this is a very weak, theoretical signal based only on test-tube data, not real people, and it's rated minor. Everyday hemp seeds or hemp oil in food are very unlikely to change how your patch works. Still, since reliable contraception matters, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor if you plan to use concentrated hemp supplements regularly.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Your patch (Ortho Evra) delivers two hormones, norelgestromin and ethinyl estradiol, and your liver clears them partly through an enzyme called CYP3A4. The note on file is theoretical: in lab dish studies, hemp seemed to speed up that enzyme. If that happened in real life, your body might break down the hormones a bit faster, which could in theory lower their levels and make the patch slightly less reliable at preventing pregnancy.

Here's the honest part: this is based only on test-tube research, not real people, and it's rated as a minor, possible interaction. The hemp seeds and hemp oil you'd eat as food are very unlikely to matter. If you use concentrated hemp supplements and rely on the patch for birth control, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
