Hemp and Conjugated Estrogens, Meprobamate

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Conjugated Estrogens, Meprobamate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

ESTROGENS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Conjugated Estrogens, Meprobamate

Conjugated Estrogens, Meprobamate falls under ESTROGENS — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp might interfere with hormone therapy due to its estrogenic effects.
In an ovariectomized animal model, a diet containing hemp seed 1%, 2%, or 10% resulted in normalized plasma levels of 17-beta-estradiol. The mechanism of action for this effect is unclear.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: this combination pairs hemp with a medicine that already contains estrogen (the conjugated estrogens part), along with meprobamate, a calming agent. The concern on file is that hemp may have mild estrogen-like activity of its own. In theory, that could nudge your hormone levels and slightly change how your estrogen therapy behaves, possibly affecting things like breast tenderness, bloating, mood, or breakthrough spotting.

I want to be straight with you, though: this is based only on animal and lab studies, not real human data, so it's a theoretical caution rather than a proven problem. Everyday food amounts of hemp seeds or hemp oil are very unlikely to matter. Concentrated hemp supplements are less certain, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding one.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Conjugated Estrogens, Meprobamate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP3A4 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for PMB, which combines conjugated estrogens with the sedative meprobamate. Lab studies suggest hemp may speed up a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which helps break down both of these ingredients. In theory, that faster clearance could lower their levels a bit, so your estrogen might feel less effective (think a return of hot flashes or other menopause symptoms) and the calming effect of meprobamate could ease off slightly.

I want to be honest with you: this is only based on test-tube research, not real people taking hemp and PMB together, so the real-world impact is probably small. Hemp seeds or oil in food are very unlikely to matter. Still, before adding a concentrated hemp supplement, run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
