Hemp + Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel
Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel brand names: Logynon, Microgynon 30 ED.
Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel falls into 3 drug categories that Hemp can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, hemp might interfere with hormone therapy due to its estrogenic effects.

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 3 Interactions?
Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
ESTROGENS
1 of 3Why this applies to Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel
Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel falls under ESTROGENS — the group Hemp interacts with.
In an ovariectomized animal model, a diet containing hemp seed 1%, 2%, or 10% resulted in normalized plasma levels of 17-beta-estradiol. The mechanism of action for this effect is unclear.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your pill, Logynon or Microgynon 30 ED, combines an estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) with a progestin (levonorgestrel) to prevent pregnancy. The concern here is that hemp may have mild estrogen-like activity of its own. In theory, adding that on top of your hormones could nudge estrogen-related effects, but honestly, this idea comes only from an animal study where hemp seed affected estrogen levels, and the reason why isn't even clear.
So please don't worry too much. The everyday hemp seeds, hemp oil, or hemp protein you might eat are very unlikely to throw off your birth control. We have no solid human evidence that they do. If you're using concentrated hemp supplements regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things like breakthrough bleeding.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
2 of 3Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel combo in Logynon and Microgynon). Lab studies suggest hemp may gently speed up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways that helps process the estrogen part of your pill. In theory, a faster enzyme could clear the hormone a touch quicker and slightly lower its levels.
The honest truth: this is very weak evidence, based only on test-tube research, not real people. The interaction is rated minor, and ordinary amounts of hemp seeds or hemp oil in food are very unlikely to affect how well your pill works. Still, since reliable contraception matters, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated hemp supplements.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
3 of 3Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP3A4 enzymes.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your birth control pill combines two hormones, ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel, and your liver clears them partly through an enzyme called CYP3A4. The concern on file is that hemp might speed up that enzyme, which could lower hormone levels a little. In theory, lower levels could make the pill slightly less reliable, and that matters most because we want steady protection against pregnancy.
Here is the reassuring part: this is only a theoretical worry from lab dishes, not from real people, and it is rated minor. Hemp seeds or hemp oil used as food are very unlikely to cause trouble. If you are using concentrated hemp supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel page
“A supplement that lowers hormone levels in a birth control pill can mean an unplanned pregnancy, and St. John's wort can do exactly that to ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel (Logynon, Microgynon 30 ED) by speeding up how your liver clears the hormones.”

About Hemp
What is Hemp?
- Plant-based protein source
- Heart health support
- Skin and hair health
- Reducing inflammation
- General nutrition (omega fatty acids)
Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
