Hemp and Propranolol

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Propranolol falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Propranolol

Propranolol falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp seed protein may have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs.
In a hypertensive animal model, hemp seed protein hydrolysate reduced systolic blood pressure by a mechanism possibly involving the inhibition of renin and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activities. However, there was no effect of hemp seed protein on blood pressure in normotensive animals. Furthermore, hempseed oil consumption does not seem to reduce blood pressure in humans.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for hemp and propranolol: the only thing on file is a theoretical concern that hemp seed protein might gently lower blood pressure on its own. If that added to what your propranolol is already doing, the worry would be your blood pressure dipping a little too low. In real life, that might show up as feeling lightheaded, tired, or dizzy when you stand up.

Honestly, though, this is very weak evidence. It comes from animal studies, and in those, hemp protein only nudged blood pressure in animals that were already hypertensive, not normal ones. Hemp seed oil didn't lower blood pressure in people at all. So eating hemp seeds in food is unlikely to matter. If you're using concentrated hemp protein supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your numbers.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Propranolol also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for propranolol: your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to help clear it from your body. Lab studies suggest hemp may speed that enzyme up a bit. If that happened in real life, your body could break down propranolol a little faster, which in theory might make it work less well. For propranolol that could look like your heart rate or blood pressure creeping up, or less control over migraines or tremor.

Now the reassuring part: this is based only on test-tube research, not on actual people, and it's rated minor. Hemp seeds or hemp oil in normal food amounts are very unlikely to cause any noticeable change. If you take a concentrated hemp supplement and notice your symptoms returning, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
