Hydrochlorothiazide falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp seed protein may have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs.
In a hypertensive animal model, hemp seed protein hydrolysate reduced systolic blood pressure by a mechanism possibly involving the inhibition of renin and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activities. However, there was no effect of hemp seed protein on blood pressure in normotensive animals. Furthermore, hempseed oil consumption does not seem to reduce blood pressure in humans.

Here's the gist: hemp seed protein might nudge your blood pressure down a little on its own, and since hydrochlorothiazide is already a blood pressure and water pill, the two could in theory add up. If that happened, you might notice signs of pressure dropping too low, like feeling dizzy, lightheaded, or woozy when you stand up quickly.

That said, I wouldn't lose sleep over this. The evidence here is very thin. It comes from animal studies, the effect only showed up in animals that already had high blood pressure, and hemp oil didn't lower blood pressure in people. Eating hemp seeds as food is very unlikely to matter. If you use concentrated hemp protein supplements, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads up.

What Is Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Esidrix, Hydro, Microzide, HydroDiuril, Hydro-D, Oretic, Aquazide H, Aquazide, HCTZ

Hydrochlorothiazide treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, either alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

It also treats edema (fluid buildup) linked to congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis (liver scarring), and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome. Hydrochlorothiazide tablets are additionally indicated for edema caused by corticosteroid or estrogen therapy, and edema from acute glomerulonephritis or chronic renal failure. Inzirqo (the oral suspension) is specifically approved for both hypertension and edema in adult and pediatric patients.
