Hydrochlorothiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Oolong Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, using oolong tea with diuretic drugs might increase the risk of hypokalemia.
Oolong tea contains caffeine. In excessive amounts, caffeine can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.

Here's the gist with hydrochlorothiazide and oolong tea. Hydrochlorothiazide is a water pill, and one of its known quirks is that it can lower your potassium level over time. Oolong tea has caffeine in it, and in large amounts caffeine can also nudge potassium a little lower. So the worry is that the two together could pull potassium down a bit more than either one alone.

I want to be honest about how strong this is: it's theoretical, based on how these things work rather than solid studies. A few cups of oolong tea most likely won't be a problem for most folks. But if you're drinking a lot of caffeinated tea daily, it's worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you ever feel muscle cramps, weakness, or an odd heartbeat. They can simply check your potassium.

What Is Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Esidrix, Hydro, Microzide, HydroDiuril, Hydro-D, Oretic, Aquazide H, Aquazide, HCTZ

Hydrochlorothiazide treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, either alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

It also treats edema (fluid buildup) linked to congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis (liver scarring), and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome. Hydrochlorothiazide tablets are additionally indicated for edema caused by corticosteroid or estrogen therapy, and edema from acute glomerulonephritis or chronic renal failure. Inzirqo (the oral suspension) is specifically approved for both hypertension and edema in adult and pediatric patients.
