Oolong Tea and Naproxen

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Naproxen

Naproxen falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Oolong Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, oolong tea might increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Oolong tea contains caffeine. Caffeine is reported to have antiplatelet activity. Theoretically, the caffeine in oolong tea might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with these agents. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: naproxen is an anti-inflammatory pain reliever, and one of its well-known habits is that it can irritate the stomach lining and make it a little harder for your blood to clot. That means it already carries a small bleeding risk on its own, especially upset stomach, heartburn, or in rare cases stomach bleeding.

The thought behind this interaction is that the caffeine in oolong tea may have a mild effect on platelets (the cells that help you clot), so in theory it could nudge that bleeding risk up a touch. I want to be honest though: this is only based on lab work, not real people, and a normal cup or two of tea is unlikely to cause trouble. If you take naproxen often, notice dark stools, or bruise easily, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

Oolong tea is a traditional partially oxidized tea made from the same plant as green and black tea, and it provides caffeine and plant antioxidants. As a beverage it is generally considered safe for most healthy adults in moderate amounts, but evidence for specific health benefits like weight loss or blood sugar control is limited. If you have heart, blood pressure, or caffeine-sensitivity concerns, talk with your pharmacist or doctor.
