Oolong tea contains caffeine. Caffeine is metabolized by cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2),. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP1A2 may decrease the clearance rate of caffeine from oolong tea and increase caffeine levels.

Here's the thing to know about pairing oolong tea with cimetidine (Tagamet): cimetidine can slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is the same enzyme your body uses to clear caffeine. So when the two are on board together, the caffeine from your tea may stick around longer than usual and build up a bit.

In real life, that might mean the caffeine hits a little harder, things like feeling jittery, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or an upset stomach. It's worth saying this is mostly a theoretical concern based on how the drug works, not a danger most people run into. A cup or two of tea is unlikely to cause trouble, but if you're sensitive to caffeine or drinking a lot, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Here's the simple version: cimetidine slows down how fast your body clears caffeine, by roughly 30% to 50%. So the caffeine in your oolong tea sticks around longer than usual. In this pairing it's the caffeine that builds up, not the cimetidine itself, so the medicine still works the same for your heartburn or reflux.

What you might notice is more of the usual caffeine stuff: feeling jittery, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or a bit of stomach upset (which isn't ideal when you're already treating acid issues). A cup or two of tea is unlikely to be a big deal for most people, but if you're drinking a lot or you're sensitive to caffeine, that's worth watching. Have a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What Is Cimetidine Used For?

Brand names: Tagamet HB, Tagamet, Cimetidine Injection

Cimetidine tablets sold over the counter — including brands like Acid Controller, Acid Reducer, Basic Care Acid Reducer, Equate Cimetidine, and cimetidine 200 — are used to relieve heartburn associated with acid indigestion and sour stomach, and to prevent heartburn brought on by eating or drinking certain foods and beverages.

Prescription-strength cimetidine tablets and Cimetidine Hydrochloride Oral Solution are used for more serious conditions: short-term treatment of active duodenal ulcers (ulcers in the upper small intestine) and benign gastric ulcers (stomach ulcers), maintenance therapy to keep duodenal ulcers from coming back, healing of erosive GERD (acid reflux that has damaged the lining of the esophagus), and treatment of conditions that cause the stomach to make too much acid — such as Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, systemic mastocytosis, and multiple endocrine adenomas.
