Levonorgestrel falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INHIBITORS — the group Oolong Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the levels and adverse effects of the caffeine in oolong tea.
Oolong tea contains caffeine. Caffeine is metabolized by cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2),. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP1A2 may decrease the clearance rate of caffeine from oolong tea and increase caffeine levels.

Here's a small wrinkle worth knowing: this interaction isn't really about your levonorgestrel changing. It's the other way around. Levonorgestrel can act as a mild blocker of CYP1A2, the liver enzyme that breaks down the caffeine in your oolong tea. With that enzyme slowed a bit, caffeine may hang around longer than usual, so you could feel jittery, have a racing heartbeat, trouble sleeping, or an upset stomach.

This is a theoretical concern based on how the drugs behave, not strong real-world proof, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it (pun intended). Plan B is a one-time dose, and a cup or two of tea is unlikely to cause trouble. If you're caffeine-sensitive, just go easy that day. Any concerns? Your pharmacist is happy to help.

Here's the thing to know: this interaction runs in the direction of the tea, not the medication. Levonorgestrel itself won't be made weaker or stronger by your oolong tea, and your emergency contraceptive will still do its job. What the research suggests is that progestin contraceptives can slow how fast your body clears caffeine, sometimes by quite a bit.

So if you're taking levonorgestrel as ongoing birth control (like a Mirena or Skyla IUD), the caffeine from oolong tea may linger longer and hit a little harder. That can mean more jitteriness, a faster heartbeat, or trouble sleeping. For a one-time Plan B dose, this barely matters. The evidence here is fairly theoretical, so don't worry, just ease up on caffeine if you feel wired and check with your pharmacist if anything feels off.

About Levonorgestrel

What Is Levonorgestrel Used For?

Brand names: Plan B, Mirena, Levonelle One Step, Levonelle 1500, Norgeston, Skyla, Liletta, Kyleena

Levonorgestrel is used in two very different ways depending on the product. As an intrauterine system (IUS), Mirena and Liletta prevent pregnancy for up to 8 years and also treat heavy menstrual bleeding for up to 5 years in people who choose intrauterine contraception. Kyleena prevents pregnancy for up to 5 years, and Skyla prevents pregnancy for up to 3 years — neither Kyleena nor Skyla is indicated for heavy menstrual bleeding.

As an oral tablet, products such as AfterPill, AfterPlan, Amazon Basic Care Levonorgestrel, Econ Morning After, Emergency Contraceptive, and Empowered Choice are used as emergency (backup) contraception to reduce the chance of pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. The oral tablet is not intended for routine birth control.
