Oolong Tea and Bivalirudin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Bivalirudin

Bivalirudin falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Oolong Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, oolong tea might increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Oolong tea contains caffeine. Caffeine is reported to have antiplatelet activity. Theoretically, the caffeine in oolong tea might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with these agents. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the good news first: this is a very low-concern pairing. Bivalirudin is a strong blood thinner given through an IV, usually in a hospital during heart procedures like angioplasty or stenting. Because it's used in a closely monitored setting, your care team is already watching you carefully for any signs of bleeding.

The theory here is that caffeine in oolong tea may have a mild effect on platelets (the cells that help blood clot), so in theory it could nudge bleeding risk up a little when combined with a blood thinner. But this is based only on lab studies, not real cases in people, and the tea's effect is tiny next to a powerful drug like bivalirudin. Moderate tea drinking is unlikely to matter, but always tell your hospital team about everything you use.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Bivalirudin page

“Bivalirudin (Angiomax) is a strong intravenous blood thinner used during heart procedures like angioplasty, and because bleeding is already its main built-in danger, this list deserves genuine care. All 202 supplements on it interact the same basic way: they thin the blood or blunt platelets themselves, stacking bleeding risk on top of…”

About Oolong Tea

What is Oolong Tea?

  • Weight management
  • Mental alertness and energy
  • Heart health
  • Blood sugar support
  • Antioxidant support

Oolong tea is a traditional partially oxidized tea made from the same plant as green and black tea, and it provides caffeine and plant antioxidants. As a beverage it is generally considered safe for most healthy adults in moderate amounts, but evidence for specific health benefits like weight loss or blood sugar control is limited. If you have heart, blood pressure, or caffeine-sensitivity concerns, talk with your pharmacist or doctor.
