Oolong Tea and Minocycline

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Minocycline

Minocycline falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Oolong Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, oolong tea might increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Oolong tea contains caffeine. Caffeine is reported to have antiplatelet activity. Theoretically, the caffeine in oolong tea might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with these agents. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind: this particular interaction note is really about oolong tea and blood thinners (anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs). Minocycline is an antibiotic, not a blood thinner, so it's a bit of an odd fit. The idea on file is that caffeine in oolong tea might have a mild blood-thinning effect and could add to the bleeding risk of true anticoagulants. This is purely theoretical, based on lab studies, and has never actually been reported in people.

For minocycline specifically, oolong tea isn't going to meaningfully change how the antibiotic works through this pathway. One separate, practical tip though: tea, milk, and antacids can bind tetracyclines like minocycline and lower how much you absorb, so it's smart to space them apart. If you have any questions, your pharmacist is happy to help.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Minocycline page

“This is one of the longer interaction lists I review, and with minocycline it earns real care rather than a shrug. Most entries pair this tetracycline antibiotic, taken for acne and other infections, with supplements that raise bleeding risk, and a second sizable group, beer and wine included, can add strain on the liver.”

If you have heart, blood pressure, or caffeine-sensitivity concerns, talk with your pharmacist or doctor.
