Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the levels and adverse effects of both caffeine and riluzole.
Oolong tea contains caffeine. Caffeine and riluzole are both metabolized by cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2), and concomitant use might reduce metabolism of one or both agents.

Here's the simple version: both the caffeine in oolong tea and your riluzole get cleared by the same liver enzyme, called CYP1A2. When two things compete for the same exit door, they can slow each other down a bit. In theory, that means slightly higher levels of riluzole (and of caffeine) in your system. Riluzole is not a prodrug, so more drug hanging around could mean more of its usual side effects, things like dizziness, tiredness, nausea, or stomach upset. The extra caffeine could also leave you jittery, with a faster heartbeat or trouble sleeping.

Keep this in perspective. This concern comes from lab studies, not real-world cases, so it's more theoretical than proven. A cup or two of oolong is unlikely to cause trouble for most folks, but please check with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything, especially if you drink a lot of tea.

What Is Riluzole Used For?

Brand names: Rilutek, Tiglutik, Exservan

Riluzole is approved to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) — the progressive neurological disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This indication is shared across all available riluzole products, including tablets (Rilutek, riluzole), the dissolving oral film (Exservan), and the oral suspension (Tiglutik).

Tiglutik oral suspension is notable in that it can also be given through a PEG-tube (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube) for patients who have difficulty swallowing.
