Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: oolong tea and your Jardiance (empagliflozin) don't really tangle with each other directly. The concern on file is about the caffeine in the tea, not the medication itself. Caffeine can nudge blood sugar a little in either direction, so in theory it could make your numbers slightly harder to predict while you're working to keep them steady.

The truth is, this is a minor and unlikely interaction, based on weak evidence. A few cups of oolong tea a day is fine for most people. Jardiance keeps working the same way (it helps your kidneys flush out extra sugar). If you notice unusual swings in your blood sugar readings, or you drink a lot of strong tea, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can fine-tune things.

“Almost everything on this page can nudge blood sugar in someone taking empagliflozin (Jardiance) for type 2 diabetes, heart failure, or kidney protection, and two entries deserve genuine caution before anything else. About Oolong Tea

What is Oolong Tea?

  • Weight management
  • Mental alertness and energy
  • Heart health
  • Blood sugar support
  • Antioxidant support

Oolong tea is a traditional partially oxidized tea made from the same plant as green and black tea, and it provides caffeine and plant antioxidants. As a beverage it is generally considered safe for most healthy adults in moderate amounts, but evidence for specific health benefits like weight loss or blood sugar control is limited. If you have heart, blood pressure, or caffeine-sensitivity concerns, talk with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Empagliflozin

What Is Empagliflozin Used For?

Brand name: Jardiance

Jardiance (empagliflozin) tablets are approved for several important uses in adults. It reduces the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization in adults with heart failure. It also slows the progression of chronic kidney disease by reducing the risk of serious kidney decline, end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization. In adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease, Jardiance reduces the risk of cardiovascular death.

Jardiance is also used — alongside diet and exercise — to improve blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes in adults and children aged 10 and older. It is not recommended for blood sugar control in type 1 diabetes (it may raise the risk of a dangerous condition called diabetic ketoacidosis) or in type 2 diabetes patients with severely reduced kidney function.
