Oolong Tea and Clinafloxacin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS

Why this applies to Clinafloxacin

Clinafloxacin falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Oolong Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, quinolone antibiotics might increase the levels and adverse effects of caffeine in oolong tea.
Oolong tea contains caffeine. Quinolones decrease caffeine clearance.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Clinafloxacin doesn't change because of the tea, the tea's caffeine changes because of the antibiotic. Clinafloxacin is a quinolone, and quinolones can slow down how fast your body clears caffeine. So while you're on this medication, the caffeine from oolong tea may stick around longer than usual.

In real life, that might mean feeling more jittery, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling on edge, basically caffeine effects that feel stronger than the same cup normally would. This is rated as a minor interaction and the evidence is on the weaker side, so it's more of a comfort issue than a danger. If you notice those symptoms, simply easing back on caffeinated drinks usually helps. Check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have questions.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clinafloxacin page

“If you have been prescribed clinafloxacin, a quinolone antibiotic, start with the four interactions rated major, because they all do the same thing: apple, grapefruit, and orange juice, along with activated charcoal, can sharply cut how much of the drug you absorb, and an antibiotic that never reaches your bloodstream cannot clear the…”

About Oolong Tea

What is Oolong Tea?

  • Weight management
  • Mental alertness and energy
  • Heart health
  • Blood sugar support
  • Antioxidant support

Oolong tea is a traditional partially oxidized tea made from the same plant as green and black tea, and it provides caffeine and plant antioxidants. As a beverage it is generally considered safe for most healthy adults in moderate amounts, but evidence for specific health benefits like weight loss or blood sugar control is limited. If you have heart, blood pressure, or caffeine-sensitivity concerns, talk with your pharmacist or doctor.
