Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Anistreplase (Eminase) is a powerful clot-busting drug given in a hospital during emergencies like a heart attack. Its whole job is to break down clots quickly, so bleeding is already its main risk. The concern with oolong tea here is purely theoretical: the caffeine in the tea may have a mild blood-thinning (antiplatelet) effect, which could in theory add to the bleeding risk.

In real life, this matters very little. Anistreplase is a one-time medical treatment given under close monitoring, and this tea-caffeine interaction has never been reported in people, only suggested by lab work. A cup or two of oolong is unlikely to make a meaningful difference. Still, your care team controls everything around this drug, so let them know what you regularly drink and follow their guidance.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the anistreplase, APSAC page

“Anistreplase (Eminase) is a clot-dissolving drug given during a heart attack, and because bleeding is already its biggest hazard, this list deserves real vigilance. Almost every ingredient here has some blood-thinning or antiplatelet activity, meaning it could stack with anistreplase and make bleeding more likely or harder to stop.”
