Here's the simple version: this isn't about the antibiotic building up, it's about the caffeine in your oolong tea. While you're on moxifloxacin, your body clears caffeine more slowly than usual. That means the caffeine from your tea can hang around longer and feel stronger than you're used to.

In real life that might look like feeling jittery, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or a touch of stomach upset. Keep in mind this is rated as a minor interaction based on limited evidence, so a cup or two of oolong probably won't cause big problems. If you tend to drink a lot of tea, coffee, or energy drinks, just go a little easier while you're taking the antibiotic, and check with your pharmacist if you notice you feel wired.

About Moxifloxacin

What Is Moxifloxacin Used For?

Brand name: Avelox

Moxifloxacin tablets and intravenous (IV) injection are approved for adults 18 and older to treat bacterial infections including community-acquired pneumonia, uncomplicated and complicated skin infections, complicated abdominal infections, plague, acute bacterial sinusitis, and acute bacterial flare-ups of chronic bronchitis. Note: moxifloxacin should only be used for sinusitis and chronic bronchitis flare-ups when no other antibiotic option is available, due to the risk of serious side effects.

Moxifloxacin ophthalmic solution (eye drops) — including the brand Vigamox — is a separate, topical formulation used only in the eye to treat bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) caused by susceptible bacteria. The eye drop form is not used for body-wide infections.
