Oolong tea contains caffeine. Caffeine is metabolized by cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2),. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP1A2 may decrease the clearance rate of caffeine from oolong tea and increase caffeine levels.

Here's a small twist worth knowing: this interaction isn't really about your birth control pill being affected. Instead, the estrogen part of your pill (mestranol, which converts to ethinyl estradiol) can gently slow down the liver enzyme called CYP1A2, and that same enzyme is what clears caffeine out of your body. So in theory, the caffeine in your oolong tea may stick around longer and feel a bit stronger.

In plain terms, you might notice more jitteriness, a faster heartbeat, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired from your usual cup or two. This is theoretical and based on pharmacology, not strong studies, so most people do fine. If you feel extra caffeine sensitive, just ease back on the tea and chat with your pharmacist.

Here's the thing to know about this combo: the interaction works in one direction. Your birth control pill (mestranol and norethindrone) doesn't change because of the tea. Instead, the hormones in the pill slow down how fast your body clears caffeine, by roughly 40 to 65 percent. So the caffeine from your oolong tea sticks around longer and may hit you harder than usual.

In real life that could mean feeling jittery, a racing or pounding heartbeat, trouble sleeping, or feeling anxious or shaky, especially later in the day. This is a minor interaction and it doesn't make your birth control less effective. A cup or two is usually fine for most people, but if you notice these effects, consider cutting back or switching to decaf. Always check with your pharmacist if you're unsure.
