Oolong tea contains caffeine. Caffeine is reported to have antiplatelet activity. Theoretically, the caffeine in oolong tea might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with these agents. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the honest take on this one. The interaction in our database is about oolong tea's caffeine possibly nudging up bleeding risk when paired with blood thinners. The catch is that selumetinib (Koselugo) isn't really a classic anticoagulant or antiplatelet drug. It's a kinase inhibitor used for NF1 tumors, so this particular caffeine-and-bleeding concern doesn't line up cleanly with how selumetinib works.

On top of that, the evidence here is only theoretical, based on lab studies, and has never actually been reported in people. A few cups of oolong tea are unlikely to cause a problem. Because I'm not fully certain how this applies to selumetinib, please run your tea habits and full medication list past your pharmacist or oncology team to be safe.

What Is Selumetinib Used For?

Brand name: Koselugo

Koselugo (selumetinib) is approved for adults and children 1 year of age and older who have neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) — a genetic condition that causes tumors to grow on nerve tissue — when they also have symptomatic, inoperable plexiform neurofibromas (large, deep nerve tumors that cannot be surgically removed and are causing problems).

Both the Koselugo capsule and Koselugo oral granule formulations are approved for this use. The oral granule form is intended for patients who have difficulty swallowing whole capsules.
