Oolong Tea and Triflupromazine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

PHENOTHIAZINES

Why this applies to Triflupromazine

Triflupromazine falls under PHENOTHIAZINES — the group Oolong Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, phenothiazines might increase the levels and adverse effects of caffeine in oolong tea.
Oolong tea contains caffeine. Phenothiazines can reduce the metabolism of caffeine by inhibiting cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2).
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for Vesprin (triflupromazine): this older antipsychotic can mildly slow down the liver enzyme (called CYP1A2) that clears caffeine out of your body. Oolong tea contains caffeine, so in theory that caffeine could hang around a little longer than usual. The result might be more of the typical caffeine effects, like feeling jittery, a faster or pounding heartbeat, trouble sleeping, or a touch of restlessness.

I want to be honest about how soft this is. It's rated minor, and the evidence comes only from lab and animal studies, not real patients. A cup or two of oolong is very unlikely to cause trouble for most people. If you drink a lot of tea or feel extra wired, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

By severity: 4 major · 55 moderate · 15 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Triflupromazine page

“Henbane carries the clearest danger on this page. Taken with triflupromazine (Vesprin), an older phenothiazine antipsychotic, its atropine-like alkaloids pile onto side effects the drug already produces (dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, sedation), and it is one of just four major-rated entries, alongside scopolia, Indian snaker…”

About Oolong Tea

What is Oolong Tea?

  • Weight management
  • Mental alertness and energy
  • Heart health
  • Blood sugar support
  • Antioxidant support

Oolong tea is a traditional partially oxidized tea made from the same plant as green and black tea, and it provides caffeine and plant antioxidants. As a beverage it is generally considered safe for most healthy adults in moderate amounts, but evidence for specific health benefits like weight loss or blood sugar control is limited. If you have heart, blood pressure, or caffeine-sensitivity concerns, talk with your pharmacist or doctor.
