Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the honest picture with sotagliflozin (Inpefa) and oolong tea. Sotagliflozin lowers blood sugar by helping your kidneys and gut get rid of extra glucose. Oolong tea itself doesn't change how your body processes this medication. The only theoretical concern is the caffeine in the tea, which some reports say can nudge blood sugar up or down a little.

This is a minor and unlikely interaction based on fairly weak evidence, so a cup or two of oolong tea probably won't throw off your numbers in any meaningful way. Still, if you drink a lot of tea or use concentrated caffeine supplements and notice your readings drifting, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor rather than adjusting anything on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Sotagliflozin page

“If you take sotagliflozin (Inpefa) for heart failure or diabetes, read this list carefully before adding any supplement, and start with the two rated major. Siberian cocklebur has caused severe low blood sugar in humans, and activated charcoal can pull the drug out of your system before it does its job.”

About Oolong Tea

What is Oolong Tea?

  • Weight management
  • Mental alertness and energy
  • Heart health
  • Blood sugar support
  • Antioxidant support

Oolong tea is a traditional partially oxidized tea made from the same plant as green and black tea, and it provides caffeine and plant antioxidants. As a beverage it is generally considered safe for most healthy adults in moderate amounts, but evidence for specific health benefits like weight loss or blood sugar control is limited. If you have heart, blood pressure, or caffeine-sensitivity concerns, talk with your pharmacist or doctor.
