Oolong Tea and Indapamide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

DIURETIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Indapamide

Indapamide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Oolong Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, using oolong tea with diuretic drugs might increase the risk of hypokalemia.
Oolong tea contains caffeine. In excessive amounts, caffeine can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for indapamide: this water pill already lowers your potassium as it pushes extra salt and fluid out through your urine. Oolong tea brings caffeine to the table, and in large amounts caffeine can nudge potassium down too. Put them together and, in theory, your potassium could dip a little lower than indapamide alone would cause.

I want to be honest about the strength of this one. It's theoretical, based on how these things work rather than real-world reports. A cup or two of oolong with your morning routine is unlikely to be a problem. Heavy caffeine intake is the bigger concern. Low potassium can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, or an irregular heartbeat, so if you drink a lot of tea or feel any of that, check in with your pharmacist or doctor about a potassium check.

About Oolong Tea

What is Oolong Tea?

  • Weight management
  • Mental alertness and energy
  • Heart health
  • Blood sugar support
  • Antioxidant support

Oolong tea is a traditional partially oxidized tea made from the same plant as green and black tea, and it provides caffeine and plant antioxidants. As a beverage it is generally considered safe for most healthy adults in moderate amounts, but evidence for specific health benefits like weight loss or blood sugar control is limited. If you have heart, blood pressure, or caffeine-sensitivity concerns, talk with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Indapamide

What Is Indapamide Used For?

Brand names: Lozol, Lozide

Indapamide tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), either on their own or together with other blood pressure medications. Lowering blood pressure helps reduce the risk of related complications.

Indapamide tablets are also used to treat salt and fluid retention (edema) associated with congestive heart failure. In certain cases, indapamide may also be appropriate during pregnancy when swelling is caused by a medical condition rather than normal pregnancy changes — but routine use in otherwise healthy pregnant women is not recommended.
