Why this applies to Amlodipine

Amlodipine falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp seed protein may have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs.
In a hypertensive animal model, hemp seed protein hydrolysate reduced systolic blood pressure by a mechanism possibly involving the inhibition of renin and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activities. However, there was no effect of hemp seed protein on blood pressure in normotensive animals. Furthermore, hempseed oil consumption does not seem to reduce blood pressure in humans.

Here's the gist with hemp and your amlodipine. Amlodipine works by relaxing your blood vessels to bring blood pressure down. The theory on file is that hemp seed protein might nudge blood pressure a little lower too, which could add to what amlodipine already does. If that happened, you could feel more of amlodipine's usual effects, like lightheadedness, dizziness when you stand up, flushing, or swollen ankles.

But I want to keep this in perspective. This idea comes only from animal lab studies, and it showed up in animals that already had high blood pressure, not normal ones. In people, hemp seed oil hasn't actually lowered blood pressure. Eating hemp seeds as food is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you're using concentrated hemp supplements, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up.

Amlodipine also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP3A4 enzymes.

Here's the short version on hemp and your amlodipine. Your body clears amlodipine using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Some early lab research suggests hemp might speed that enzyme up. If that happened in real life, your body could break down amlodipine a little faster, which theoretically could make it work slightly less well. For a blood pressure medicine, that might mean numbers creeping up, or chest pain not as well controlled.

That said, this is based only on test-tube and animal studies, not people, and it's rated as a minor, possible interaction. Eating hemp seeds in food is very unlikely to matter. If you use concentrated hemp supplements regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your blood pressure.

What Is Amlodipine Used For?

Brand name: Norliqva

Amlodipine treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children aged 6–17 years. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Sdamlo (oral solution) is specifically indicated for hypertension in adults and pediatric patients 6 years of age and older.

Amlodipine also treats coronary artery disease in adults, including chronic stable angina (chest pain with exertion), vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal's or variant angina, caused by coronary artery spasms), and documented coronary artery disease in patients without heart failure or significantly reduced heart pumping function.
