Here's the honest picture with your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate combo in Ortho Tri-Cyclen and its generics). The concern with hemp is purely theoretical. In one animal study, hemp seed in the diet seemed to nudge natural estrogen levels, but nobody fully understands why, and there's no good human data showing hemp changes how well your pill works.

Because this rests on lab and animal findings only, I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The amount of hemp in foods like hemp seeds or hemp oil is very unlikely to affect your contraception. Since reliable birth control really matters, just give your pharmacist a heads-up before starting concentrated hemp supplements, and watch for anything unusual like breakthrough bleeding.

Here's the short version for your birth control pill (the combo of ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate). Some lab studies suggest hemp may speed up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which plays a small role in processing estrogen. In theory, that could lower hormone levels a little, and with birth control, anything that lowers hormone levels raises a worry about reduced reliability for preventing pregnancy.

That said, I want to be honest about the strength here: this is based only on test-tube and animal data, not real people, and it's rated as a minor, possible interaction. Eating hemp seeds or hemp oil as food is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you're using concentrated hemp supplements, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Here's the gist for your birth control pill (Ortho Tri-Cyclen and similar): the hormones in it, ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate, are processed by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Some lab research hints that hemp may speed that enzyme up a bit. If that happened in the body, it could lower your hormone levels and, in theory, make the pill slightly less reliable, which matters most when you're counting on it to prevent pregnancy.
