Hemp + Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel
Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel brand name: Lybrel.
Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel falls into 3 drug categories that Hemp can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, hemp might interfere with hormone therapy due to its estrogenic effects.

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 3 Interactions?
Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
ESTROGENS
1 of 3Why this applies to Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel
Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel falls under ESTROGENS — the group Hemp interacts with.
In an ovariectomized animal model, a diet containing hemp seed 1%, 2%, or 10% resulted in normalized plasma levels of 17-beta-estradiol. The mechanism of action for this effect is unclear.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Lybrel is a birth control pill that combines two hormones, ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and levonorgestrel (a progestin), to prevent pregnancy. The concern on file is that hemp may carry mild estrogen-like activity of its own, so in theory it could nudge your hormone balance. Honestly, though, this idea comes only from a lab and animal study, where hemp seed in the diet helped normalize estrogen levels in animals that had their ovaries removed. We don't have human data showing it changes how well the pill works.
The practical takeaway: eating hemp seeds or hemp oil as food is very unlikely to cause trouble. I wouldn't expect this to weaken your contraception. Still, if you're using concentrated hemp supplements, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them in.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
2 of 3Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the situation with your birth control pill (Lybrel) and hemp. In a lab dish, hemp seemed to speed up an enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways that helps process the estrogen part of your pill. If hemp really nudged that enzyme along in the body, it could in theory lower estrogen levels a little. With a contraceptive, the worry would be slightly weaker coverage, which can show up as breakthrough spotting or, at the far end, less reliable pregnancy prevention.
That said, this is only test-tube evidence, not something proven in people, and it's rated as a minor, possible concern. Food amounts of hemp seeds or hemp oil are very unlikely to matter. If you want to use concentrated hemp supplements regularly, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
3 of 3Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP3A4 enzymes.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the deal with hemp and your birth control pill (Lybrel). The active hormones, ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel, are partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Some lab research suggests hemp may speed that enzyme up. If that happened in real life, your body could break down the hormones a little faster, which in theory could lower their levels and make the pill slightly less reliable at preventing pregnancy.
The important part: this is only based on test-tube studies, not on people, and it's rated a minor interaction. Food amounts of hemp seeds or hemp oil are very unlikely to matter. If you use concentrated hemp supplements regularly, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor to be safe.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel page
“A daily birth control pill like Lybrel (ethinyl estradiol with levonorgestrel) only works when enough hormone stays in the bloodstream, and that is exactly what several supplements on this page can undermine. This list deserves genuine care, starting with the six major-rated entries.”

About Hemp
What is Hemp?
- Plant-based protein source
- Heart health support
- Skin and hair health
- Reducing inflammation
- General nutrition (omega fatty acids)
Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
