Hemp and Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 3 Interactions?

Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

ESTROGENS

1 of 3

Why this applies to Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol

Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol falls under ESTROGENS — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp might interfere with hormone therapy due to its estrogenic effects.
In an ovariectomized animal model, a diet containing hemp seed 1%, 2%, or 10% resulted in normalized plasma levels of 17-beta-estradiol. The mechanism of action for this effect is unclear.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Your medication (Yasmin, Gianvi, or Angeliq) combines a synthetic estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) with drospirenone. The concern on file is that hemp seems to have mild estrogen-like activity. In theory, adding hemp on top of an estrogen product could nudge your hormone levels or how your body responds to them. The honest truth, though, is that this idea comes only from a single animal study, and the way it might work isn't even clear.

So I wouldn't lose sleep over enjoying hemp seeds or hemp oil as food. Concentrated hemp supplements are a bigger unknown. If you're using this for birth control or hormone therapy, just mention any hemp supplements to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

2 of 3

Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for your birth control pill (Yasmin and similar brands): some lab studies suggest hemp might speed up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. In theory, revving up that enzyme could clear certain medications a little faster and make them slightly weaker. With your pill, that could mean less reliable hormone levels, which matters most for keeping pregnancy prevention dependable.

That said, this is a theoretical, lab-only finding rated minor, and CYP1A2 isn't even the main pathway for these hormones. So the real-world risk is likely small, and eating hemp seeds or hemp oil as food shouldn't be a concern. Still, if you're using concentrated hemp supplements regularly, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

Here's the gist with your birth control pill (Yasmin and similar combos contain drospirenone plus ethinyl estradiol). Your body clears these hormones partly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies hint that hemp may speed that enzyme up, which could theoretically lower hormone levels a bit. In plain terms, if the pill clears faster, there's a small worry it might work less reliably for preventing pregnancy, or you could notice more breakthrough spotting.

But please keep this in perspective. This is based only on test-tube research, not real people, so it's far from proven. The amounts in hemp seeds or hemp oil as food are very unlikely to matter. If you use concentrated hemp supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can reassure you or suggest backup options.

About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
