Hemp + Naproxen
Naproxen brand names: Naprosyn, Naprelan, Anaprox, Anaprox DS, Naproxyn, and others.
Naproxen falls into 2 drug categories that Hemp can interact with; the most serious is rated minor. Theoretically, hemp seed might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Naproxen falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).
ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Naproxen
Naproxen falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Hemp interacts with.
In animal research, hemp seed at 5% of the diet inhibits platelet aggregation in vitro. However, in human research, taking hemp seed oil 2 grams daily for 12 weeks does not inhibit the aggregation of platelets in vitro.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: naproxen (Naprosyn, Aleve) is an NSAID, and one of its known quirks is that it can thin the blood a little and irritate the stomach lining, which raises bleeding risk. Hemp seed has been looked at for a possible mild blood-thinning effect too, so in theory stacking the two could add up to a touch more bruising or bleeding.
The good news is the evidence here is weak. The only signal came from an animal and lab study using hemp at high amounts. When people took 2 grams of hemp seed oil daily for 12 weeks, it did not affect platelets. So normal food amounts of hemp are very unlikely to matter. Still, if you take naproxen regularly or use concentrated hemp supplements, check with your pharmacist and watch for unusual bruising, dark stools, or stomach upset.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Naproxen also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for naproxen and hemp. Some lab studies suggest hemp may rev up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear naproxen. If hemp speeds that clearance up, naproxen could theoretically be broken down a little faster, meaning you might get slightly less pain and anti-inflammatory relief from your usual dose.
I want to be straight with you, though: this is rated a minor interaction and it's only based on test-tube research, not real people. Naproxen is not a prodrug, so it doesn't get stronger here. Everyday hemp seeds or hemp oil in food are very unlikely to matter. If you take concentrated hemp supplements and notice your naproxen isn't working as well, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Hemp
What is Hemp?
- Plant-based protein source
- Heart health support
- Skin and hair health
- Reducing inflammation
- General nutrition (omega fatty acids)
Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Naproxen Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Naproxen as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Hemp — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
