Hemp and Levonorgestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 3 Interactions?

Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Levonorgestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

ESTROGENS

1 of 3

Why this applies to Levonorgestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol

Levonorgestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol falls under ESTROGENS — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp might interfere with hormone therapy due to its estrogenic effects.
In an ovariectomized animal model, a diet containing hemp seed 1%, 2%, or 10% resulted in normalized plasma levels of 17-beta-estradiol. The mechanism of action for this effect is unclear.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the short version: this combination is mostly a theoretical concern. Your pill, which pairs levonorgestrel with ethinyl estradiol, delivers steady hormone levels to prevent pregnancy. The worry on file is that hemp might have mild estrogen-like activity of its own. In one animal study, hemp seed in the diet seemed to nudge natural estrogen levels back toward normal, but the reason why was never pinned down.

What does that mean for you? There's no good human evidence that eating hemp seeds or hemp oil weakens your birth control or changes your hormone effects. Culinary amounts are very unlikely to matter. Still, since steady hormones are what keep this pill working, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist before using concentrated hemp supplements.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

2 of 3

Levonorgestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP1A2 enzymes.

Here's the gist for your birth control pill (the levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol combo). In a test-tube study, hemp appeared to speed up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways that helps process estrogen. If that enzyme runs faster, the theory is your body could clear the hormones a little quicker, which in a worst-case scenario might make the pill slightly less reliable.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This is graded as a minor, theoretical interaction based only on lab research, not real people, and eating hemp seeds or hemp oil as food is very unlikely to cause trouble. Since an unplanned pregnancy is a big deal, it's still worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated hemp supplements regularly.

Here's the gist for your birth control pill (the levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol combo). Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break these hormones down. Some early lab research hints that hemp might speed that enzyme up, which in theory could clear the hormones a little faster and slightly lower their levels in your body.

If that happened, the worry would be weaker pregnancy protection or some breakthrough spotting. But honestly, this is very theoretical, it comes only from test-tube studies, and food amounts of hemp seeds or hemp oil are unlikely to make any real difference. Concentrated hemp or CBD products are a bigger unknown, so if you use those regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can weigh in.

Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
