Hemp + Trandolapril, Verapamil
Trandolapril, Verapamil brand name: Tarka.
Trandolapril, Verapamil falls into 4 drug categories that Hemp can interact with; the most serious is rated minor. Theoretically, hemp seed protein may have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs.

These two interact in 4 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 4 Interactions?
Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Trandolapril, Verapamil falls into 4 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 4 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).
ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
1 of 4Why this applies to Trandolapril, Verapamil
Trandolapril, Verapamil falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hemp interacts with.
In a hypertensive animal model, hemp seed protein hydrolysate reduced systolic blood pressure by a mechanism possibly involving the inhibition of renin and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activities. However, there was no effect of hemp seed protein on blood pressure in normotensive animals. Furthermore, hempseed oil consumption does not seem to reduce blood pressure in humans.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Tarka pairs two blood pressure medicines: trandolapril (an ACE inhibitor) and verapamil (a calcium channel blocker). The concern with hemp is purely theoretical. In one animal study, hemp seed protein appeared to gently lower blood pressure by blocking some of the same ACE activity your trandolapril already targets. On paper, that could add to your medication's effect.
Here is the reassuring part: this was only seen in lab and animal models, and hemp seed oil did not actually lower blood pressure in people. So eating hemp seeds or using hemp oil in food is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you take concentrated hemp protein and notice dizziness, lightheadedness, or unusually low readings, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

ACE INHIBITORS (ACEIs)
2 of 4Trandolapril, Verapamil also falls under ACE INHIBITORS (ACEIs).
Hemp seed protein hydrolysate has shown ACE inhibitor-like effects in a hypertensive animal model. However, hempseed oil consumption does not seem to reduce blood pressure in humans. Until more is known, monitor blood pressure and potassium levels.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the deal with Tarka, which combines trandolapril (an ACE inhibitor) and verapamil (a calcium channel blocker). Both of these already work to lower your blood pressure. In some lab and animal studies, hemp seed protein acted a little like an ACE inhibitor itself. The idea is that stacking hemp seed protein on top of your medicine could, in theory, nudge your blood pressure down a bit more than expected.
I want to be honest though: this is a minor, unlikely concern based only on test-tube and animal work, and hemp seed oil hasn't actually lowered blood pressure in people. Eating hemp seeds as food is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you use concentrated hemp protein supplements, just keep an eye out for dizziness or lightheadedness, and check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
3 of 4Trandolapril, Verapamil also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Tarka combines two blood pressure medicines: trandolapril (an ACE inhibitor) and verapamil (a calcium channel blocker). The concern on file is that hemp might rev up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which could in theory speed up how fast your body clears certain drugs, leaving slightly less in your system. In plain terms, that could mean your blood pressure pills work a touch less well, with numbers creeping up.
Here is the honest part: this is theoretical and comes only from lab research, not from people. The rating is minor, and everyday hemp seeds or hemp oil in food are very unlikely to cause trouble. If you use concentrated hemp supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor and keep an eye on your blood pressure.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
4 of 4Trandolapril, Verapamil also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP3A4 enzymes.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Tarka combines two blood pressure medicines, and the verapamil part is broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Some early lab research hints that hemp might speed that enzyme up. If that happened in real life, your body could clear verapamil a little faster, which in theory might make Tarka work slightly less well. You could notice your blood pressure creeping up, or your heart rate not staying as controlled as usual.
Here's the honest part: this comes only from test-tube and lab data, not from people, so it's very much a theoretical concern. Everyday food amounts of hemp seeds or hemp oil are unlikely to cause trouble. Still, if you use concentrated hemp supplements, let your pharmacist or doctor know so they can keep an eye on your numbers.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Trandolapril, Verapamil page
“This is one of the supplement lists I would want a patient to read closely, not skim. Tarka combines trandolapril and verapamil to lower blood pressure, and most of these interactions pull on that same lever, either dropping pressure further than intended or working against the medicine altogether.”

About Hemp
What is Hemp?
- Plant-based protein source
- Heart health support
- Skin and hair health
- Reducing inflammation
- General nutrition (omega fatty acids)
Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
