Hemp + Warfarin Sodium
Warfarin Sodium brand names: Coumadin, Panwarfin, Sofarin.
Warfarin Sodium falls into 3 drug categories that Hemp can interact with; the most serious is rated minor. Theoretically, hemp seed might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 3 Interactions?
Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Warfarin Sodium falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).
ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
1 of 3Why this applies to Warfarin Sodium
Warfarin Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Hemp interacts with.
In animal research, hemp seed at 5% of the diet inhibits platelet aggregation in vitro. However, in human research, taking hemp seed oil 2 grams daily for 12 weeks does not inhibit the aggregation of platelets in vitro.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the honest picture with hemp and warfarin. The concern is purely theoretical. In animal studies, large amounts of hemp seed (about 5% of the diet) slowed platelets from clumping together, which could in theory add to warfarin's blood-thinning effect and slightly raise bleeding risk. But in a human study, hemp seed oil at 2 grams daily for 12 weeks did not affect platelets at all.
Warfarin is a narrow-window drug, so even small shifts can nudge your INR and matter. Normal food amounts of hemp seeds are very unlikely to cause trouble. Still, since you're on warfarin, keep your hemp intake steady rather than starting big concentrated doses, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding any new supplement so your INR can be watched if needed.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
2 of 3Warfarin Sodium also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for warfarin. Lab studies suggest hemp might speed up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear warfarin. In theory, that could nudge warfarin levels down a little, meaning your blood thinner might work slightly less well and your INR could drift lower. With warfarin, even small shifts matter because it has a narrow safe range, so a weaker effect could raise clot risk while too strong an effect raises bleeding risk.
That said, this is theoretical and comes only from test-tube data, not real people. Food amounts of hemp seeds are very unlikely to cause trouble. Still, before adding any concentrated hemp supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor and keep up with your INR checks.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
3 of 3Warfarin Sodium also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP3A4 enzymes.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thinking on hemp and warfarin. Lab studies suggest hemp might speed up a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways that helps clear warfarin. If hemp nudges that enzyme to work faster, your body could break warfarin down a bit quicker, which in theory might make it slightly less effective at thinning your blood. That could mean a little less clot protection.
I want to be honest though: this is only seen in test-tube research, not in real people, and it's rated as a minor, possible interaction. Warfarin is a tricky drug where small shifts matter, and it's already affected by changes in diet and vitamin K. So enjoy hemp foods if you like them, but tell your pharmacist or doctor before adding concentrated hemp supplements, and keep up with your regular INR checks.

About Hemp
What is Hemp?
- Plant-based protein source
- Heart health support
- Skin and hair health
- Reducing inflammation
- General nutrition (omega fatty acids)
Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
About Warfarin
What Is Warfarin Used For?
Brand names: Coumadin, Panwarfin, Sofarin
Warfarin sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets are both used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs). They are also used to prevent clot-related complications in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had a heart valve replaced.
In people who have had a heart attack, warfarin is used to reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, stroke, or other clotting events. It does not dissolve an existing clot, but it helps prevent the clot from growing and stops new dangerous clots from forming.
