Hemp and Acetaminophen, Caffeine, Chlorpheniramine, Hydrocodone, Phenylephrine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Hemp interacts with whole categories of medication. Acetaminophen, Caffeine, Chlorpheniramine, Hydrocodone, Phenylephrine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Hemp in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Caffeine, Chlorpheniramine, Hydrocodone, Phenylephrine

Acetaminophen, Caffeine, Chlorpheniramine, Hydrocodone, Phenylephrine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Hemp interacts with.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the gist with this combo product. Lab studies suggest hemp may rev up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which could speed up how your body clears certain medicines. In this particular product, the ingredient most affected by that enzyme is the caffeine. If hemp nudges that enzyme to work faster, you might notice the caffeine wearing off a little sooner or feeling slightly weaker. Honestly, that's a pretty small deal for most folks.

The good news: this is only theoretical, based on test-tube research, not real patient cases. The pain reliever (acetaminophen and hydrocodone), the antihistamine, and the decongestant aren't meaningfully affected here. Food amounts of hemp seeds almost certainly won't matter. If you take concentrated hemp supplements regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Acetaminophen, Caffeine, Chlorpheniramine, Hydrocodone, Phenylephrine also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, hemp might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that hemp induces CYP3A4 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

This combo product (Hycomine Compound) includes hydrocodone for cough and pain, and hydrocodone is partly processed by the CYP3A4 enzyme in your liver. The lab data here suggests hemp might speed up that enzyme. In theory, that could clear hydrocodone a little faster, which might mean slightly less cough and pain relief than you'd expect. The caffeine in this product also leans on CYP3A4, so it could be affected too.

Honestly, this is a very weak, theoretical concern. It comes from test-tube research, not from people, and it's rated as a minor interaction. Normal food amounts of hemp seeds or hemp oil are very unlikely to matter. If you're using concentrated hemp supplements regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist so they can keep an eye on how well the medicine is working.

About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Heart health support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Reducing inflammation
  • General nutrition (omega fatty acids)

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are nutritious foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and they are generally safe for most people as part of the diet. While the nutrition is real, strong human evidence that hemp supplements treat specific medical conditions is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using hemp products for a health concern, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
