The evidence for most of these probiotics is still emerging. Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome and respiratory tract infections. For most other conditions — allergies, asthma, anxiety, cognitive decline, and several others — the data we hold shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate effectiveness.

Lactobacillus acidophilus and the Bifidobacterium species are generally well tolerated in healthy children and adults. However, the safety data are limited, and these products contain live bacteria, which carries a theoretical concern: in rare cases, especially in very ill, premature, or immune-compromised patients, these organisms have been reported to cause serious infections like bacteremia or sepsis.
Gastrointestinal side effects — bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea — are uncommon but can occur when you first start a probiotic. One ingredient, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, was associated with rash and itching in a clinical trial, though it's unclear whether the probiotic itself was responsible.
For pregnancy and lactation, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and Streptococcus thermophilus are rated possibly safe, but the data are limited. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, especially since your child's own pregnancy or breastfeeding decisions may be far off.

L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Lactobacillus bulgaricus (SD-6833)
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus delbrueckii with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. delbrueckii.
Lactobacillus delbrueckii preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. delbrueckii preparations by at least two hours.
Lactobacillus gasseri (SD-5585)
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus gasseri with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. gasseri.
