What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking L-Glutamine 500 mg against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This supplement contains one active ingredient: L-glutamine, an amino acid your body makes naturally and uses for immune function, gut health, and recovery from stress and illness. The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, and vegetable magnesium stearate — which are standard binders and fillers.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
L-glutamine is effective for sickle cell disease. It's possibly effective for HIV/AIDS-related wasting, recovery after surgery, and critical illness from trauma.
The evidence we hold doesn't establish its use for other purposes, so talk with your doctor about whether it might help with your specific health goal.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-glutamine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. Common side effects from oral use include belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain — especially at higher doses.
Headache, dizziness, and musculoskeletal pain have also been reported. If you have kidney or liver disease, use it only under a doctor's supervision.
There isn't enough safety data to recommend supplemental doses during pregnancy or while breastfeeding unless a clinician advises it — talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it in these situations.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticonvulsant medications (seizure drugs), check your specific medication with your pharmacist or doctor before using this product — glutamine may theoretically reduce their effectiveness. The interaction hasn't been reported in patients yet, but it's a caution worth confirming with your healthcare provider given how important seizure control is.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-glutamine may be worth considering if you have sickle cell disease or are recovering from surgery or critical illness, or if your doctor recommends it for HIV-related wasting. If you take seizure medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — they can tell you whether it's safe for you given your other prescriptions.
For healthy adults, it's generally well tolerated, though digestive upset and headache do occur.
