Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients. L-Glutamine is an amino acid your body makes naturally; it plays a role in immune function, gut health, and muscle recovery, particularly after surgery or serious illness.
Vitamin B6 is an essential nutrient that helps your body process amino acids and maintain nerve and brain function. The remaining ingredients—cellulose, silica, and magnesium stearate—are inactive fillers and binders that make up the capsule.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-Glutamine is established as effective for sickle cell disease and possibly effective for recovery after surgery, critical illness from trauma, and wasting related to HIV/AIDS. Vitamin B6 is effective for treating a form of anemia called sideroblastic anemia and for vitamin B6 deficiency itself, and it's possibly effective for nausea and vomiting in pregnancy.
The combination of both ingredients together hasn't been evaluated for any specific condition in the data we hold.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both ingredients are generally well tolerated at standard doses. L-Glutamine is well tolerated orally in healthy adults, but people with kidney or liver disease should use it only under a doctor's supervision.
There isn't enough safety data to recommend glutamine supplements during pregnancy or breastfeeding without medical advice. Vitamin B6 is safe at normal dietary amounts, but high doses over time can damage nerves; doses exceeding 1,000 mg daily carry the most risk, though nerve damage can occur at lower amounts too.
The most common side effects from glutamine include belching, bloating, constipation, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, particularly at high doses. Vitamin B6 commonly causes headache, nausea, and stomach pain, and rarely can trigger sensory nerve problems.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you're on anticonvulsants (seizure medications like phenytoin or phenobarbital), check before you start—vitamin B6 at high doses may reduce how well they work. Double-check if you take amiodarone (for heart rhythm), blood pressure medications, or levodopa without carbidopa.
No interactions are documented for L-Glutamine with any medications other than anticonvulsants.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is designed for people recovering from surgery, dealing with critical illness, or managing sickle cell disease—talk with your pharmacist or doctor about whether it fits your situation. If you take seizure medications, heart medications, blood pressure drugs, or Parkinson's medications, check your specific prescriptions before starting.
Your pharmacist can help you spot any conflicts with your personal medication list.

L-Glutamine 500 mg by Country Life Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Country Life's L-Glutamine 500 mg contains two active ingredients, and together they interact with a considerable number of medications.
The most serious concern is with anticonvulsant drugs (such as phenytoin and phenobarbital): the vitamin B6 in this product may reduce their blood levels at high doses, making them less effective at controlling seizures. Additionally, vitamin B6 may increase how sensitive your skin becomes to sunburn if you're taking amiodarone (a heart rhythm medication), and it can theoretically lower blood pressure when combined with blood pressure medications—which matters if your pressure is already controlled.
Altogether, these interactions span 247 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-Glutamine itself carries a theoretical concern with anticonvulsants: it's metabolized to glutamate, an excitatory brain chemical that might work against seizure medications, but this hasn't been reported in actual patients yet. The vitamin B6 also interacts with levodopa (Parkinson's medication), though only when levodopa is taken alone without carbidopa.
If you take any prescription medication—especially for seizures, heart rhythm, blood pressure, or Parkinson's disease—run it through the medication checker on this page before you start.

For each ingredient in L-Glutamine 500 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Vitamin B6
Amiodarone (Cordarone)
Theoretically, vitamin B6 might increase the photosensitivity caused by amiodarone.
Despite initial case reports suggesting that pyridoxine may have a protective effect against amiodarone-induced photosensitivity, preliminary clinical research suggests that pyridoxine may actually exacerbate this adverse effect.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, vitamin B6 may have additive effects when used with antihypertensive drugs.
Research in hypertensive rats shows that vitamin B6 can decrease systolic blood pressure. Similarly, clinical research in patients with hypertension shows that taking high doses of vitamin B6 may reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure, possibly by reducing plasma levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine.
Phenobarbital (Luminal)
High doses of vitamin B6 may reduce the levels and clinical effects of phenobarbital.
Preliminary clinical evidence suggests that vitamin B6 200 mg daily can reduce plasma levels of phenobarbital, possibly by increasing metabolism. It is not known whether lower doses have any effect. Advise people taking phenobarbital to avoid high doses of vitamin B6.
Phenytoin (Dilantin)
High doses of vitamin B6 may reduce the levels and clinical effects of phenytoin.
Preliminary clinical evidence suggests that vitamin B6 200 mg daily can reduce plasma levels of phenytoin, possibly by increasing metabolism. It is not known whether lower doses have any effect. Advise people taking phenytoin to avoid high doses of vitamin B6.
Levodopa
Vitamin B6 may increase the metabolism of levodopa when taken alone, but not when taken in conjunction with carbidopa.
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) enhances the metabolism of levodopa, reducing its clinical effects. However, this interaction does not occur when carbidopa is used concurrently with levodopa (Sinemet). Therefore, it is not likely to be a problem in most people.
L-Glutamine
Anticonvulsants
Theoretically, glutamine might antagonize the effects of anticonvulsant medications.
Glutamine is metabolized to the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate. Glutamate might have antagonistic effects with anticonvulsant drugs. However, this interaction has not yet been reported in humans.
