What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-Glutamine at 750 mg per capsule. Glutamine is an amino acid that plays a role in immune function, gut health, and muscle metabolism — your body produces it naturally, but supplemental doses are sometimes used to support recovery from illness or surgery.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients (fillers and binders): hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, water, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, and silicon dioxide.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-Glutamine is rated Effective for sickle cell disease. It's rated Possibly Effective for HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery, and critical illness from trauma — meaning some evidence supports its use for these conditions, but more research is needed to be certain.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Glutamine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. The most common side effects from oral use are gastrointestinal: belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
Headache and musculoskeletal pain have also been reported. Rare cases of dizziness, mania, and hypomania have been documented in specific populations, including people with bipolar disorder.
If you have kidney or liver disease, use only under medical supervision. The safety data during pregnancy is rated Likely Safe.
However, there isn't enough reliable safety data for breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist before supplementing while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticonvulsants (seizure medications), check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting this supplement — glutamine might theoretically reduce how well these drugs work. No interactions are documented in our data for other drug types, but that's not a guarantee none exist elsewhere.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Glutamine may help with sickle cell disease and possibly with recovery from surgery or critical illness. If you take anticonvulsant medication, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
Healthy adults generally tolerate it well, though digestive side effects are common at higher doses. Discuss this supplement with your own healthcare provider, especially if you have kidney or liver disease or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Jarrow Formulas L-Glutamine 750 mg may interact with anticonvulsant medications (drugs used to prevent seizures).
L-Glutamine is broken down in your body into glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter that could theoretically work against how anticonvulsants are supposed to calm brain activity. This is a moderate concern.
However, this interaction hasn't been reported in actual patients yet — it's a theoretical risk based on how the ingredient is metabolized.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Although only one drug category shows documented interaction potential, the ingredient may affect multiple anticonvulsant medications. If you take any seizure medication, run your exact drugs through the search tool below or talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting this supplement.
