Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients: L-glutamine (500 mg per capsule) and vitamin B6. L-glutamine is an amino acid that your body uses for protein synthesis and immune function.
Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble vitamin that supports brain development, immune function, and the formation of neurotransmitters and red blood cells. The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — cellulose, silica, and magnesium stearate — which are fillers and binders used to form and stabilize the capsule.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-glutamine is effective for sickle cell disease and possibly effective for HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery, and critical illness from trauma. Vitamin B6 is effective for sideroblastic anemia (a blood disorder), vitamin B6 deficiency, and pyridoxine-dependent epilepsy.
It's likely effective for high homocysteine levels and possibly effective for pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both ingredients are generally well tolerated at the doses in this product. L-glutamine may cause belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, headache, and gastrointestinal pain — most commonly at higher doses.
Two cases of mania or hypomania have been reported in people with bipolar disorder taking up to 4 grams daily. Vitamin B6 can cause similar stomach symptoms, headache, and loss of appetite at lower doses; at very high doses (especially above 1,000 mg daily), it may damage nerves over time.
People with kidney or liver disease should use L-glutamine only under medical supervision. There isn't enough safety data to recommend L-glutamine supplements during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless a doctor advises it, though L-glutamine itself is rated likely safe in pregnancy.
Vitamin B6 is likely safe in pregnancy and lactation at recommended levels, but high doses should be avoided unless a clinician recommends them.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take anticonvulsants (phenytoin, phenobarbital, or others), antihypertensive drugs, amiodarone, or levodopa alone. These are the medication types with documented interactions — vitamin B6 may reduce anticonvulsant levels, add to blood pressure-lowering effects, worsen amiodarone-related sun sensitivity, or reduce levodopa's effectiveness.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may be helpful if you have sickle cell disease or HIV/AIDS-related wasting, or if you're recovering from surgery or critical illness — but the evidence for some uses is preliminary. If you take anticonvulsants, blood pressure medications, amiodarone, or levodopa (especially without carbidopa), check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, as vitamin B6 may affect how these drugs work.
Anyone with kidney or liver disease should get medical supervision before using it.

L-Glutamine Caps 500 mg by Country Life Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Country Life's L-Glutamine Caps 500 mg contains two active ingredients, and through its vitamin B6 content, this product may interact with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with anticonvulsant drugs like phenytoin and phenobarbital — high doses of the vitamin B6 in this product might reduce how well these seizure medications work by speeding up how your body breaks them down.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Vitamin B6 can also theoretically add to the blood-pressure-lowering effects of antihypertensive drugs, and preliminary evidence suggests it may worsen the skin sensitivity to sunlight caused by the heart medication amiodarone. For levodopa (used in Parkinson's), vitamin B6 may reduce its effectiveness — but only if you're taking levodopa alone, not the combination product Sinemet, which contains carbidopa.
L-glutamine itself may theoretically interfere with anticonvulsant medications, though this hasn't been reported in humans yet. We could not check the inactive ingredients (cellulose, silica, and magnesium stearate) for interactions.
Alto altogether, these interactions span 249 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to see if any of your prescriptions are affected, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product.

For each ingredient in L-Glutamine Caps 500 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Vitamin B6
Amiodarone (Cordarone)
Theoretically, vitamin B6 might increase the photosensitivity caused by amiodarone.
Despite initial case reports suggesting that pyridoxine may have a protective effect against amiodarone-induced photosensitivity, preliminary clinical research suggests that pyridoxine may actually exacerbate this adverse effect.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, vitamin B6 may have additive effects when used with antihypertensive drugs.
Research in hypertensive rats shows that vitamin B6 can decrease systolic blood pressure. Similarly, clinical research in patients with hypertension shows that taking high doses of vitamin B6 may reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure, possibly by reducing plasma levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine.
Phenobarbital (Luminal)
High doses of vitamin B6 may reduce the levels and clinical effects of phenobarbital.
Preliminary clinical evidence suggests that vitamin B6 200 mg daily can reduce plasma levels of phenobarbital, possibly by increasing metabolism. It is not known whether lower doses have any effect. Advise people taking phenobarbital to avoid high doses of vitamin B6.
Phenytoin (Dilantin)
High doses of vitamin B6 may reduce the levels and clinical effects of phenytoin.
Preliminary clinical evidence suggests that vitamin B6 200 mg daily can reduce plasma levels of phenytoin, possibly by increasing metabolism. It is not known whether lower doses have any effect. Advise people taking phenytoin to avoid high doses of vitamin B6.
Levodopa
Vitamin B6 may increase the metabolism of levodopa when taken alone, but not when taken in conjunction with carbidopa.
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) enhances the metabolism of levodopa, reducing its clinical effects. However, this interaction does not occur when carbidopa is used concurrently with levodopa (Sinemet). Therefore, it is not likely to be a problem in most people.
L-Glutamine
Anticonvulsants
Theoretically, glutamine might antagonize the effects of anticonvulsant medications.
Glutamine is metabolized to the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate. Glutamate might have antagonistic effects with anticonvulsant drugs. However, this interaction has not yet been reported in humans.
