L-Glutamine Powder Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking L-Glutamine Powder against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This is a straightforward single-ingredient supplement: L-glutamine, an amino acid your body makes naturally and uses for gut health, immune function, and muscle recovery. The product contains no fillers or inactive ingredients — it's glutamine powder, plain.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence shows glutamine is effective for sickle cell disease. It's considered possibly effective for HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative (after-surgery) recovery, and critical illness from trauma.
If you're considering this for one of those conditions, talk with your doctor about whether it fits your situation and what dose makes sense.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Glutamine is generally well tolerated by healthy adults. Digestive side effects — belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain — are the most common, especially at high doses (10–30 grams daily).
Headache and dizziness have also been reported; one patient's dizziness resolved after cutting the dose in half. If you have kidney or liver disease, use this only under your doctor's supervision.
There isn't enough safety data to recommend it during pregnancy without a provider's guidance — though the available evidence rates it likely safe, it's best to confirm with your own doctor. Similarly, not enough data exists for breastfeeding, so talk with a clinician before using supplement doses while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Anticonvulsant medications (seizure drugs) are the main concern — in theory, glutamine might reduce how well they work, though this hasn't been proven in patients. Check your exact seizure medication in the search tool below, and confirm with your own doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-glutamine may help if you have sickle cell disease, certain types of wasting, or are recovering from surgery or critical illness — talk with your doctor about whether it's right for you. If you take anticonvulsant (seizure) medications, check with your own pharmacist or doctor before starting.
Digestive upset is common, especially at higher doses. Use the search tool on this page to confirm your exact medications before you begin.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Glutamine Powder by Wonder Laboratories has one documented interaction: anticonvulsant medications (seizure drugs) may be affected through a theoretical antagonism.
Glutamine is broken down in your body into glutamate, an excitatory chemical messenger in the brain. In theory, this could work against how anticonvulsants keep seizures under control.
However, this interaction hasn't been reported in actual patients yet — it's a lab-based concern, not a proven clinical problem.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Anticonvulsant medications are the main drug type to flag before you start. If you take any seizure medication, check your exact drug names in the search tool below before adding this supplement, and run it by your own doctor or pharmacist first.
Although interaction data for this ingredient spans 50 individual medications, the only interaction category documented in our monograph is anticonvulsants. We could not verify whether those 50 medications represent only this category or include others; if you're on any prescription, use the search tool to confirm before you begin.
