What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-glutamine, an amino acid your body naturally makes and uses for gut health, immune function, and muscle recovery. There are no inactive ingredients listed in this formulation — it's straight powder.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-Glutamine is effective for sickle cell disease. The evidence rates it as possibly effective for HIV/AIDS-related wasting, recovery after surgery, and critical illness from trauma.
For other uses not listed here, we don't have effectiveness data on file.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Glutamine is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. The most common side effects are digestive — belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, gas, nausea, and stomach pain.
Headache and musculoskeletal pain have also been reported. In rare cases, people with bipolar disorder have experienced mania or hypomania, and dizziness has occurred at high doses but improved when the dose was reduced.
Not enough safety data exists for pregnant or breastfeeding women to say it's clearly safe at supplement doses unless a doctor recommends it. If you have kidney or liver disease, use this only under medical supervision.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's appropriate for your situation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticonvulsant medications (drugs to prevent seizures), check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting L-Glutamine — there's a moderate-severity theoretical risk that glutamine could work against how these drugs prevent seizures, though this hasn't been confirmed in patients.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Glutamine may help with sickle cell disease and possibly with recovery from surgery or critical illness, but it's most important to check whether it will interfere with anticonvulsant medications if you take them. It's generally well tolerated, though digestive upset is common, especially at higher doses.
Before starting, discuss this supplement with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have kidney or liver disease or take any regular medications.

(graphinc) L-Glutamine Levels with Supplementation L-Glutamine Levels without Supplementation Increasing Intensity of Fatigue and Mental Stress Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body. It serves a broad range of critical roles, including immune function support, digestive tract health, energy production and in the building and protecting of lean muscle mass. Normally, the body generates plenty of its own glutamine stores; therefore, it is considered to be a “non-essential” amino acid. However, during times of stress (both physical and mental), increased demand for glutamine may far outpace the body’s ability to produce it. This is when glutamine becomes a “conditionally essential” amino acid for ensuring optimal physiological functions. This is why supplemental glutamine intake is immeasurably beneficial for supporting the needs of hard-training athletes and fitness enthusiasts.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Glutamine by CytoSport interacts with anticonvulsant medications (drugs used to prevent seizures) through a theoretical mechanism — glutamine is broken down in your body into glutamate, an excitatory brain chemical that might work against how anticonvulsants do their job.
The concern is moderate in severity, but this interaction has not yet been observed in actual patients, only in theory.

No other medication interactions are documented in our data for this ingredient. That said, the absence of documented interactions is not a guarantee that none exist — some interactions may simply not have been studied or reported yet.
If you take anticonvulsant medications or any other prescription drugs, run them through the search tool on this page before starting L-Glutamine, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you.
