HelloPharmacist Scorecard of L-Theanine 200 mg by Bluebonnet
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-Theanine, a naturally occurring amino acid found in tea leaves. The capsule also holds several inactive ingredients — cellulose, hypromellose, purified water, and magnesium stearate — which are standard binders and fillers.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-Theanine is possibly effective for supporting cognitive function. For age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, generalized anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and cancer, the evidence we have isn't reliable enough to rate it either way — there simply isn't enough data to make a call.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Theanine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults when used for short periods, but we don't have solid long-term safety data. Some people have reported headaches, drowsiness, longer sleep, or more vivid dreams after taking it.
There isn't enough safety data to know whether it's okay during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so it's best to talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant or nursing before starting this.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your blood pressure medications first — L-Theanine could intensify their effects. Also double-check any CNS depressants (sleep aids, benzodiazepines, opioids) and serotonergic drugs (antidepressants like SSRIs) before you start, even though the evidence for those two categories is less clear-cut.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're looking to support cognitive function and you're not on blood pressure or CNS depressant medications, L-Theanine may be worth considering. Anyone taking blood pressure drugs or sedating medications should check with us first.

L-Theanine 200 mg by Bluebonnet Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Bluebonnet's L-Theanine 200 mg does interact with certain medications.
The main concern is with blood pressure medications (antihypertensives). L-Theanine may lower blood pressure on its own, and when combined with drugs that do the same thing, the drop could be greater than intended — this is a Moderate interaction.
If you take any blood pressure medication, you'll want to check it against our tool before starting this.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
There are also Minor interactions to be aware of. L-Theanine might add to the sedating effects of CNS depressants (like benzodiazepines, sleep aids, or opioids), though it's not clear how much of a real-world concern this is.
Similarly, L-Theanine's effect on serotonin levels in the brain is unclear from the research — some studies suggest it raises serotonin, others suggest it lowers it — but there are no reported cases of it actually causing serotonin syndrome or serotonin-related side effects, even in combination with serotonergic drugs (like SSRIs or SNRIs). Altogether, these interactions span 563 individual medications.
To be safe, run your exact medications through our interaction checker below before you begin.

L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
