What’s inside
Full disclosure
This is a straightforward single-ingredient product: L-tryptophan 500 mg per capsule. L-tryptophan is an amino acid your body uses to make serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in mood, sleep, and other functions.
The capsule also contains cellulose and stearic acid as inactive ingredients (binders and fillers).
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence on L-tryptophan for depression shows it is possibly ineffective based on the data we hold. For anxiety, athletic performance, bruxism (teeth grinding), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), there isn't enough reliable evidence to say whether it works.
If you're considering it for one of these uses, talk it over with your doctor about whether the science supports it for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-tryptophan is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. The most common side effects are mild: belching, diarrhea, drowsiness, dry mouth, flatulence, headache, heartburn, lightheadedness, nausea, stomach pain, blurred vision, and vomiting.
A serious but rare side effect is eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS), a neurological disorder. However, almost all documented EMS cases in the US in 1989 came from L-tryptophan contaminated during manufacturing by a single Japanese company; today's products are not from that source.
The safety data in pregnancy is conflicting—one source rates it likely safe, another rates it possibly unsafe—so you should discuss it with your doctor before taking it during pregnancy. For breastfeeding, safety is not established, so the data advises against it.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check your medications with the tool on this page, especially if you take CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, strong pain relievers) or serotonergic drugs (antidepressants, migraine medications, and others). L-tryptophan can add to drowsiness and potentially increase the risk of serotonin-related side effects.
Your doctor or pharmacist can tell you if any of your drugs fall into these categories.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Tryptophan might interest someone looking for a natural mood or sleep support, but the evidence that it works for depression is weak. The main caution is interactions with sedatives, sleep aids, pain relievers, and especially antidepressants and other serotonin-related medications.
If you take any prescription or over-the-counter drugs, check them against the interaction tool on this page before starting. Talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you.

L-Tryptophan 500 mg by DC Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Tryptophan 500 mg by DC can interact with medications, primarily through its effect on the nervous system and serotonin pathways.
The most serious concern is with CNS depressants—drugs that slow brain activity like sedatives, sleep aids, and some pain relievers—where L-tryptophan may add to drowsiness and sedation (Major severity). Clinical research confirms that L-tryptophan itself causes fatigue and drowsiness.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The second major interaction class is serotonergic drugs (Moderate severity)—medications that work through the serotonin system, including many antidepressants, migraine drugs, and others. L-tryptophan is a building block for serotonin in your body, so combining it with these drugs could theoretically increase the risk of serotonin-related side effects, including a rare condition called serotonin syndrome and blood vessel constriction in the brain.
Altogether, these interactions span 394 individual medications. Before you start this supplement, run your exact medications through the interaction checker on this page—especially anything that makes you drowsy or affects serotonin.
