MegaFlora Probiotic Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by MegaFood
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking MegaFlora Probiotic against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of MegaFlora Probiotic by MegaFood
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
MegaFlora Probiotic contains 14 active ingredients—a proprietary blend of live bacterial strains including Lactobacillus species (acidophilus, casei, plantarum, rhamnosus, salivarius, brevis, bulgaricus, and gasseri), Bifidobacterium species (animalis lactis, longum, bifidum, and longum infantis), Lactococcus lactis, and Streptococcus thermophilus. These are beneficial bacteria intended to support gut health.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients: hypromellose, microcrystalline cellulose, L-leucine, and silicon dioxide. These are fillers and binders that help form and stabilize the capsule.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for MegaFlora's ingredients is mixed. Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for IBS and respiratory tract infections. For most other conditions listed in the data—allergies, asthma, anxiety, cognitive decline, constipation, and diabetes—the evidence is insufficient to rate these ingredients.
That means we don't yet have reliable data to say whether they work for those purposes. Talk with your doctor about what this product might help with based on your own health needs.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The live bacterial strains in MegaFlora are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. The most common side effects from probiotics are mild gastrointestinal symptoms—bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, or diarrhea—and these occur uncommonly.
Rarely, a rash or itching has been reported in trials. There is a theoretical concern that live probiotic organisms could cause serious infection (bacteremia or sepsis) in people with severely weakened immune systems, critical illness, or central lines, though such cases are uncommon.
Lactobacillus acidophilus is rated possibly safe in pregnancy; Bifidobacterium longum and the longum infantis strain are rated possibly safe in pregnancy and lactation. Data on safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding are limited for most other strains in this blend, so check with your doctor or pharmacist before use during these periods.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
The main medication type to double-check is antibiotics. Taking antibiotics at the same time as MegaFlora may reduce how well the probiotic works because the antibiotic can kill the live bacteria.
Your doctor or pharmacist can help you space them apart. No other drug interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
MegaFlora may be worth considering if you're looking for a multi-strain probiotic, especially if you have IBS or need a probiotic during or after antibiotic use—just time them apart. If you take antibiotics regularly, have a weakened immune system, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist first to make sure this product is right for you.

MegaFlora Probiotic by MegaFood Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
MegaFood's MegaFlora Probiotic contains several live bacterial strains—Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus gasseri, Bifidobacterium longum, and Bifidobacterium bifidum—that interact with antibiotic drugs.
The most serious documented interaction is Moderate: antibiotics taken at the same time may kill a significant portion of the live organisms in the probiotic, reducing its effectiveness. This applies to all four of these ingredients.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Because these probiotics contain live and active microorganisms, antibiotics can destroy them during simultaneous use. The data advises separating the timing of antibiotics and this product to protect the probiotic's viability.
Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
Several other ingredients in this blend—Bifidobacterium animalis lactis, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus brevis, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, and Lactococcus lactis—we could not check because we hold no data for them. Additionally, Streptococcus thermophilus was checked and shows no interactions documented in our data.
Before you start MegaFlora, use the medication checker on this page to see if you take any antibiotics, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist about timing.
