What’s inside
Full disclosure
Hawaii Pharm's Oatstraw contains one active ingredient: oat straw extract (in dry form). The product also includes alcohol, water, and glycerin as inactive ingredients to preserve and deliver the extract.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Oat straw extract is likely effective for managing cholesterol and triglycerides (a condition called dyslipidemia) and for supporting heart health in coronary heart disease. The evidence for these uses is solid.
We don't hold effectiveness data for other uses of this product.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Oats are generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. The most common side effects are digestive: abdominal bloating, flatulence, distension, and an unpleasant taste — these usually fade as your body adjusts.
To minimize them, start low and increase your dose slowly. Oats eaten as food are considered safe in pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
Concentrated supplement forms like this one are less well studied during pregnancy and lactation, so there isn't enough data to know either way. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you're pregnant or nursing.
People with difficulty swallowing or conditions that slow digestion should be cautious, as oat bran can rarely cause intestinal blockage.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your antidiabetes medications and insulin with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product. Both carry a Moderate risk of low blood sugar if combined with oats.
Altogether, these interactions span 86 individual medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're managing high cholesterol or heart disease and aren't on diabetes or insulin medication, oat straw extract is a well-tolerated option with solid evidence behind it. If you do take diabetes or insulin drugs, check with your doctor or pharmacist first — you may need a dose adjustment to avoid low blood sugar.
Start with a small dose to let your digestive system adapt.

Oatstraw by Hawaii Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Hawaii Pharm's Oatstraw is a single-ingredient product made from oat straw extract.
It does interact with diabetes and insulin medications — through a moderate-severity mechanism where oats may lower blood sugar additively, raising the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Oats can decrease blood glucose on their own. If you take antidiabetes drugs (like metformin, sulfonylureas, or GLP-1 agonists), oats may intensify that effect.
The concern is the same with insulin: research shows that 100 grams of oats daily for just 2 days can reduce the insulin dose needed to maintain control, meaning you might end up over-treated and experience low blood sugar symptoms — shakiness, sweating, confusion, or rapid heartbeat.
If you're on any diabetes or insulin medication, you'll want to check your exact drugs with the search tool on this page before adding this supplement. Your doctor or pharmacist may need to adjust your dose.
