Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

We hold no graded evidence for this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: nerve transmission and electrolyte balance.
  • We looked for evidence on: hypokalemia, muscle function, cardiovascular function.
  • Our graded evidence for these ingredients doesn't cover that particular purpose.

We don't hold effectiveness data for potassium in the facts on file for this product.

Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Potassium from food is fine, but supplements are a different story — they can push your blood levels dangerously high, especially if you have kidney disease or take certain medications. A small number of people taking potassium supplements experience common stomach upset (abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, flatulence), and in rare cases, high levels can trigger irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias), low blood pressure (hypotension), heart block, or confusion.

The facts note potassium supplements are likely safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding, but only potassium from food is considered appropriate during those times without medical guidance — if you're pregnant or nursing and considering a supplement, talk with your doctor or pharmacist first to see if you need one.

Ace Inhibitors (Aceis)

Using ACEIs with high doses of potassium increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
ACEIs block the actions of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and reduce potassium excretion. Concomitant use of these drugs with potassium supplements increases the risk of hyperkalemia. However, concomitant use of these drugs with moderate dietary potassium intake (about 3775-5200 mg daily) does not increase serum potassium levels.

Likelihood Likely Evidence C
Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (Arbs)

Using ARBs with high doses of potassium increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
ARBs block the actions of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and reduce potassium excretion. Concomitant use of these drugs with potassium supplements increases the risk of hyperkalemia. However, concomitant use of these drugs with moderate dietary potassium intake (about 3775-5200 mg daily) does not increase serum potassium levels.

Oligo Potassium by MBi Nutraceuticals: Common Questions

Does Oligo Potassium by MBi Nutraceuticals interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Oligo Potassium has a known interaction with 62 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Oligo Potassium contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will this upset my stomach?
Potassium supplements commonly cause abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, belching, and flatulence in people who take them by mouth. If your doctor recommends a potassium supplement, talk about whether a liquid form or a different dose might work better for you.
Is it safe in pregnancy?
The data rates potassium as likely safe during pregnancy, but potassium from food is what's recommended at that time. Supplements should only go ahead with your doctor's approval — talk with them about whether you need one.
Can I take this while breastfeeding?
Dietary potassium is appropriate when breastfeeding, but before using a supplement, check with your doctor or pharmacist — they can advise whether you actually need one.
What does potassium do?
Potassium is an electrolyte that keeps your heartbeat steady, muscles working, and nerves firing. Your body gets it from food — you need a supplement only if your doctor says you have a deficiency.
What's in this liquid besides potassium?
The inactive ingredients are deionized water, ethanol, and dextrose — they're there to suspend and deliver the potassium, not as active ingredients.
Can high potassium hurt me?
Yes — too much potassium in your blood can cause irregular heartbeats, weakness, low blood pressure, heart block, or confusion. That's why this supplement should only be used under medical guidance, especially if you take blood-pressure or heart medications.
